What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white engraving rendered with dense hatching and fine crosshatched lines typical of burin work on copper. In the lower left foreground, an emaciated crippled man sits on straw on the ground, dressed in tattered, torn clothing with exposed shoulders, a cloth cap, and his legs bandaged and twisted beneath him. He extends one hand toward the center while a small empty bowl rests at his feet. Standing before him are two bearded middle-aged men in voluminous draped cloaks — one balding in profile, the other with curly hair behind him — gesturing with open hands toward the beggar. Behind them a tight cluster of five onlookers watches with deeply wrinkled faces and long beards; one wears a helmet, another a tall pointed cap, and another a soft beret-like hat. In the background, a thick fluted column and a brick wall with a small grated window and a dark doorway suggest the outer court of a temple. Light creates stark contrasts between the bright folds of the cloaks and the deeply shadowed wall behind.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the contrast between the beggar on the ground and the standing figures surrounding him. Then follow the hands: the outstretched hand asking and the hands blessing or speaking. Finally notice the faces of the background witnesses, each with a different reaction that shifts the tone of the scene.

ContextContexto

This work is an engraving by Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471–1528), dated 1512 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its title, Peter and John Healing the Cripple at the Gate of the Temple, refers to an episode from the Acts of the Apostles. It belongs to German Renaissance print culture. Dürer was one of the most influential masters of European printmaking, renowned for his technical mastery of engraving and woodcut. No further description is provided in the source, but the composition likely comes from a small-format series of religious scenes intended for wide circulation as prints.

Curious detailDato curioso

By 1512 Dürer was famous across Europe for the almost miniature precision he achieved using only engraved lines on metal, often marking his prints with his well-known AD monogram.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the burin technique that Dürer mastered in 1512. Look at the dense hatching and crosshatched lines that build volume in the draped cloaks and deep shadows by the brick wall. The contrast between the white paper and intense black gives relief to the ragged clothing and illuminated folds. As a conservator I am interested in how this black and white print keeps its sharpness over time and how directed light highlights every wrinkle and beard in the group of onlookers.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this scene as a study of light and shadow, almost like a night sky. Dürer uses black and white to separate the illuminated from the dark, as if the cloaks were constellations against a deep background. The crippled man sits in the foreground on straw, in half shadow, while the two standing apostles seem to radiate brightness with their light fabrics. Behind, the fluted column and the small barred window cut through the darkness of the temple. It reminds me how in the cosmos contrast helps us distinguish distant figures within a crowd.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look at the man sitting on the ground! He wears torn clothes on his shoulders and his legs are bandaged, and next to him there is a little empty bowl as if he were asking for coins. The two men standing with big cloaks look at him with open hands, as if they were going to help him stand up. Behind there are many grandpas with beards and funny hats, one with a helmet and another with a pointy hat, all crowded together watching. And in the back you can see a giant column and a brick wall with a tiny window with bars.
