What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the image a vast iron and glass hall dominates the background, seen head-on, with its enormous glazed arch and vaulted roof structure. A French flag flutters at its apex, flanked by ornate pylons and tall lampposts; to the far right, the faint silhouette of the Eiffel Tower, newly built, rises against a cloudy sky. Light filters softly through the windows, contrasting with the darker, densely inked foreground. Below, a bustling crowd fills the esplanade: horse-drawn carriages with draped canopies, horses, street vendors and hundreds of visitors. In the lower left, a wheeled stall with a partly legible inscription offers drinks; a woman seen from behind, wearing a white cap and apron, sits on a stool tending the cart. To her right, several figures raise their arms, some waving or calling out, dressed in dark late-19th-century clothing with hats and full skirts. The wood engraving line is fine and energetic, with cross-hatching that builds texture in the clouds, foliage and fabrics. The black ink on cream paper reveals the paper grain, and the signature A. Lepère appears in the lower right corner, with a second handwritten signature below.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the luminous great arch in the background and let your eye move down to the sea of people and carriages. Pause on the figures with raised arms in the middle ground, then on the small drink stall at the lower left that grounds the monumental in everyday life. Notice how the distant Eiffel Tower silhouette anchors the place and date.

The print is titled Leaving the 1889 Exhibition and is by Auguste Louis Lepère (French, 1849–1918), an artist well known as an engraver and illustrator. The conservatorLa restauradora
I pause on the cream paper and black ink, on how the grain of the sheet lets Lepère's fine, nervous line breathe. Look at the cross-hatching that builds the cloudy sky and the dense shadows in the foreground, contrasted with the soft light entering through the large glazed arch. As a conservator I notice the 1889 wood engraving and how the ink sits differently in each area. The signature A. Lepère in the lower right corner reminds us of the hand that controlled every cut.

I look at this esplanade as if it were a sky full of motion. In the background the huge iron and glass hall dominates with its arched vault, and further to the right the fresh silhouette of the Eiffel Tower appears, the great landmark of 1889. Atop the crest a French flag waves between ornate pylons and tall lampposts. The soft light crossing the windows reminds me of watching an eclipse: the contrast between the bright structure and the dark crowd below reveals the human scale against the architecture.

There are so many people! It looks like a giant party with carriages with awnings, horses and little carts on wheels. In front I see a lady from behind with a white cap and apron sitting on a stool serving her cart. Next to her everyone raises their arms, as if saying bye! or come here! I like to spot the little flag on top of the crystal palace and the tiny Eiffel Tower in the back on the right. The drawing is made with little lines that make everything look very busy and noisy.
