What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white wood engraving, horizontal in format with a thin rectangular border, printed on cream-colored paper with wide, empty margins. Seen from a slightly elevated viewpoint, a lively bank of the Seine stretches toward a broad horizon. In the foreground, at the bottom, a pale staircase descends from the right; several people walk down or gather on it in dark groups, rendered with quick, dense strokes. To the left, a railing curves beside what looks like a tripod or viewing stand, surrounded by strollers, and dark, almost solid-black trees frame the edge. In the middle ground, a sunlit promenade fills with small figures in hats walking, talking, and pausing by stalls and low rooftops. A sign at the left reads “GRAND TIR,” partly legible. On the right, the river occupies half the scene: barges, a smoking steamboat, and small floating structures line the bank, their reflections suggested by short horizontal lines. In the distance rise bridges, faint buildings, clouds built from fine hatching, and the unmistakable lattice silhouette of the Eiffel Tower. Below the image appear the engraved signature “A. LEPÈRE,” a handwritten signature, and the numbering “10/35.”

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dark figures on the stairs in the foreground, then let your eye follow the bright path along the bank toward the river. Only afterward look for the Eiffel Tower on the horizon: its recent, slender silhouette changes a busy riverside scene into a portrait of Paris entering a new era.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is Le Point-du-Jour, a wood engraving made in 1890 by French artist Auguste Louis Lepère (1849–1918), now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Le Point-du-Jour is a district in western Paris beside the Seine. Lepère was known for his wood engravings and for scenes of contemporary Parisian life. The Eiffel Tower, completed in 1889 for the Exposition Universelle, had been standing for only about a year when the print was made, which explains its prominent place on the horizon. The exact viewpoint of the scene is not stated in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889, just one year before this print; at the time it was the tallest human-made structure in the world, a title it held until 1930.

I pause on the cream paper and how the black ink sits on it. This is a wood engraving with very controlled marks: short horizontal lines suggest the water of the Seine, fine hatching builds the clouds, and the almost-black masses of the trees contrast with the pale staircase in the foreground. I notice the engraved signature A. LEPÈRE, the handwritten signature and the numbering 10/35 below, traces of the print edition. Everything is held by a thin rectangular border that organizes the scene without taking air from the wide margins.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

From this elevated viewpoint I look for landmarks on the horizon and there it is, unmistakable, the lattice silhouette of the Eiffel Tower, which had been standing for barely a year when Lepère made this engraving in 1890. It is not night, but I imagine how this lively riverbank would change at dusk, with the dark river and the reflections of the barges and the steamboat. The steam smoke and the tiny hatted figures remind me that Paris was already a modern city that could be observed like a populated sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are so many people! Down below I see a light-colored staircase and groups of people with hats who look like little ants walking, chatting and stopping by small stalls. On the left there is a curved railing and super black trees that seem to cut out the drawing. On the right is the Seine River with barges and a little boat puffing smoke. Far in the back you can see bridges and the tiny Eiffel Tower but I recognize it by its shape. If you look carefully, on the left there is a sign that says GRAND TIR.
