What you would seeLo que verías

A low, wide ceramic vessel sits centered against a smooth, neutral gray background. Its color is a warm, earthy reddish-brown, mottled with darker areas, pale scuffs and age wear. The form is compact and grounded: a small rounded base expands outward to a sharp, faceted shoulder, then turns slightly inward to an uneven, subtly lobed rim that appears chipped and worn. The entire exterior is covered with hand-incised decoration. Encircling the upper shoulder is a continuous band of tiny impressed triangles and interlocking zigzags. Below, the body is organized into vertical panels separated by bundles of fine parallel lines; inside each panel, horizontal striations alternate with rows of crisp zigzag patterns, creating a rhythmic, textile-like geometry. The surface looks coarse and granular, with small pits, abrasions and subtle color variations that reveal the fired earthenware. Soft, even lighting emphasizes the shallow relief of the incisions and the thickness of the rim, while the open mouth reveals a shadowed interior. The object feels both practical and intentionally embellished, sized to be held with two hands, balancing sturdiness with delicate craftsmanship.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the overall silhouette, from the small rounded bottom to the chipped, wavy rim. Then trace the incised panels and notice how vertical line bundles frame dense zigzag bands. Look closely at the wear on the edge, which reveals age and handling.

Curious detailDato curioso

The reddish tone of this ware comes from iron-rich clay turning red during firing, and the incised decoration was cut into the clay while it was still soft, without need for paint.

I pause to look at what time has written on the clay. I see the reddish and terracotta tone, with dark stains and wear that speak of centuries of use and burial. I am drawn to the incised grooves, that band of triangles and zigzags on the shoulder and the vertical panels divided by parallel lines. Each chip and pore reminds me that this is fired clay, rough and fragile at once, and that preserving it means respecting the anonymous hand that shaped and decorated it before 1550.

When I look at this vessel I think about how ancient peoples also read patterns in the sky and on the earth. Its angled shoulder is surrounded by a continuous band of triangles and zigzags, like a miniature horizon. Below, the vertical panels with bundles of fine parallel lines remind me of constellations arranged with geometric rhythm. It is a low and stable jar, with a wide mouth and wavy rim, sized to fit between two hands, holding in its reddish clay an idea of order and repetition.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a deep little plate but it is a chubby clay vessel the color of brick, with dark spots as if it got dirty while playing. It has a big mouth and a wobbly, chipped rim. The most fun part is its little drawings made of scratches: on top it has a bracelet of tiny triangles and zigzags that goes all the way around, and below it has lines that look like roads dividing little houses with more zigzags inside. It looks scratchy and I want to trace its tiny grooves with my finger.

Look at the shoulder of the vessel in the photo: what small geometric shape repeats over and over in the band around it?

They are little points that, together with zigzag lines, form a continuous bracelet around the upper part.

  2. #2

Look closely at the rim of the mouth: how is its outline described, smooth and perfect or irregular with small losses?

    HintPista

The lip is not even, it looks wavy and worn by time, revealing the thickness of the clay.

  3. #3

What is the main color of the clay of this vessel, according to its red ware with incised patterns technique?

    HintPista

Think of the color of brick or fired clay, with dark stains from the passage of time.
