What you would seeLo que verías

The object is a carved wooden rattle in the form of an elongated raven, seen in profile against a smooth gradient background from dark to light gray. The bird’s body forms a horizontal axis: the long, strong beak points to the right, painted black with turquoise and ochre details and a red interior in the open mouth; the eye is a large oval with a black pupil outlined in yellow. The belly and side display characteristic Northwest Coast formline design with ovoid and U-shapes in black, red and worn turquoise. On the raven’s back lie two reclining human figures with stylized faces, bulging eyes, open mouths showing teeth, and bodies painted red; between them a small turquoise frog rests on their torsos. At the left end, the raven’s tail is carved as another animal head with a short snout and marked ears. A cylindrical handle of light, unpainted wood projects to the left, showing grain, cracks and clear wear. Even lighting highlights wood texture, crazing of the pigment and areas where paint has chipped away to reveal the wood beneath.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the raven’s beak on the right and move along the back toward the tail to find the two figures and the frog. Notice how the bird’s belly is painted as an additional face with large eyes and curving lines that turn the body into a visage. Look for paint loss along edges and beaks, traces of ceremonial use and age.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a Raven Rattle dated to the late 1800s to early 1900s, attributed to the Haida people of the Northwest Coast of North America, in the region of British Columbia and Alaska. It is made of wood and pigment and belongs to the Art of the Americas collection. The source description notes that rattles showing ravens with figures on their backs may depict shamanic acts, involving interaction with other-than-human beings to control weather, heal or locate animals, and that such rattles, while possibly originating with shamans, were also used by secular chiefs in winter ceremonies as symbols of power. The carver is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

The raven’s underside is painted as an extra face with two large eyes and a stylized mouth, so the animal’s body contains another visage, a common visual play in Haida art.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause at the marks of time this wood holds with dignity, I see the crackled black, red and turquoise pigment and the areas where paint has flaked off revealing the pale grain, the handle shows cracks and wear from ceremonial use, I am moved imagining the hands of the Haida carver from the late nineteenth century who shaped the elongated raven and its figures, to preserve it is to honor its living history without erasing its scars.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This raven feels like a portable constellation, its horizontal body is like a celestial axis and the yellow and black oval eye looks like an eclipse watching us, the two human figures reclining on its back and the little turquoise frog between them make me think of travelers on a vessel, I recall these rattles were used in winter ceremonies when nights are longest, perhaps their sound accompanied stories under the dark sky of the Northwest Coast between British Columbia and Alaska.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a super long raven with a giant duck beak! It has a huge eye looking at me and very pretty colors, black, red and turquoise, on top it carries two little people lying down with visible teeth and open mouths as if they were singing, and between them there is a tiny turquoise frog, at the back it has another little face with small ears, its wooden handle is all worn out because they must have shaken it a lot to make shh shh shh at celebrations.

On the raven's back there are two little people and between them there is a tiny animal, what color is it and what animal is it?

    HintPista

Look at the center of the back, between the two red bodies there is a small figure in the same color as the beak detail.

If you count carefully the human figures reclining on the raven's back, how many do you see?
