What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a small black-ink etching printed in the center of a much larger sheet of cream, slightly aged paper with irregular margins, wrinkles, and a tan stain at the lower left corner. Below the printed rectangle there are faint handwritten inscriptions in pencil, partly legible and appearing upside down in relation to the scene. Inside the print, three large sailing ships with black hulls are moored on calm water. Their tall, bare masts and dense crisscrossing rigging fill the upper half of the composition like dark webs against a hatched, cloudy sky. The ship on the right stands apart, while the two on the left overlap and merge. Their reflections stretch down in wavy vertical lines across the water. At lower left, a small empty rowboat drifts near the shore; in the far left distance, a pale waterfront building with small arches is barely sketched. The foreground is an almost empty paved quay, drawn with a few diagonal lines and patches of shadow. Exactly in the center at the bottom stands a single short, dark mooring bollard, small but sharply defined against the bright water.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the three dark hulls and let your eye rise through the tangle of masts. Then come back down to the small bollard on the quay: once you notice it, the whole image seems to be standing still and watching. Finally, follow the reflections in the water, where the ships dissolve into broken lines.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, *Three Ships, Venice* is an etching made in 1880 by Otto H. Bacher (American, 1856–1909), donated by Mrs. Arthur F. Weaver in memory of Charles H. Weaver. Etching is an intaglio printmaking technique in which a design is incised into a metal plate with acid and then printed in ink on paper. In the late nineteenth century, Venice — its canals, quays, and shipping — was a favored subject for European and American artists. Which exact quay is shown, and the precise identity of the ships, are not known from the available information.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: the short dark bollard on the quay, seen by itself, looks for a moment like a solitary person standing with their back to us, watching the ships.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why do you think the artist left the quay in the foreground almost completely empty?¿Por qué crees que el artista dejó casi por completo vacío el muelle del primer plano?
  2. What changes in the scene if we imagine sound, movement, and harbor work instead of this stillness?¿Qué cambia en la escena si imaginas ruido, movimiento y trabajo portuario en lugar de esta quietud?
  3. Does the tangle of masts seem orderly, chaotic, or both at once to you, and why?¿El enredo de mástiles te parece ordenado, caótico o ambas cosas a la vez, y por qué?

The conservatorLa restauradora

This etching lives at two scales. First there is the large cream sheet #efe7d3, with its uneven edges, soft wrinkles and that yellowish stain at the lower left. Then, at the center, the small rectangle printed in black #1c1a17. I pause on the dark bollard on the quay: tiny yet firm. The water is made of thin hatched lines and the reflections are wavy vertical strokes. Below there are faint pencil inscriptions, upside down. Everything asks for low light and clean hands.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this print like a night sky. The tall masts and rigging form a dark constellation, a web of lines crossing the hatched and cloudy sky. The three black hulls are like cut-out silhouettes against the horizon. Their reflections drop straight into the water, like elongated stars that tremble. I love the emptiness of the quay: that almost blank foreground lets the eye breathe. Only the bollard and the small empty boat anchor the view, like reference points.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like three giants sleeping on the water. Their poles are very tall and have lots of tiny crossed strings, as if they were going to weave the sky. One is alone on the right and two are close together on the left, almost hugging. In the water you see their long shadows wiggling. Below there is an empty dock with a little black post that looks like a toy. And a tiny boat floating by itself. Everything is in black and white, with none of the colors you use to paint rainbows.

Count carefully: how many large dark-hulled sailing ships are moored on the calm water?

    HintPista

Not one or two, look at the title and the black hulls overlapping on the left.

  2. #2

On the empty quay in the foreground, what small dark object stands right at the center against the shine of the water?

    HintPista

It is used to tie up boats and looks like a short black post.

  3. #3

If you look at the whole sheet, what creamy color is the large paper surrounding the small print?

    HintPista

It is a light warm tone, almost like aged paper, look for its code among the colors listed.
