What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, two young women dominate the center against a creamy paper background with a fibrous texture. On the right, standing and leaning slightly forward, a woman in a black kimono with a beige collar and a long salmon-pink obi holds with both hands a small dark green mesh pouch and a reddish cord; her hair is styled in a high, voluminous black coiffure adorned with elongated golden hairpins, her pale face looks down with half-closed eyes and a small mouth. On the left, kneeling on the floor, another woman in a muted sage-green kimono with a white geometric star pattern and a brown sash lifts both open hands toward the pouch, her face upturned with parted lips and a pleading gaze; her bare feet with pinkish toes peek from under the fabric and her pulled-up hair carries a single light kanzashi. Behind, to the right, stands a two-panel folding screen painted with a gnarled pine tree with deep green foliage and an ochre trunk on a light ground. In the upper left corner, an inset cartouche shows a second scene at small scale: a stout, half-naked man in an orange loincloth brandishing a long sword over a fallen man in green clothing and a yellow hat, beside bundles of yellowish straw and grass. The light is flat and diffuse, typical of woodblock prints, with no strong shadows, fine black outlines and soft, matte colors. At lower left on the floor lie a green bundle and white rolls, and vertical black calligraphy and seals run along the margins.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the quiet exchange of the pouch between the hands and the contrasted faces of pleading and restraint; then move up to the small upper-left inset where the sword attack of Act V breaks in and reframes the intimate gesture. Finish on the pine screen, which both frames and separates the feminine domestic world from the theatrical outside.

ContextContexto

A color woodblock print (nishiki-e) by Japanese artist Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1754–1806), active in the Edo period (1615–1868), dated to the late 1790s according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held as a Gift from J. H. Wade in the Japanese Art department. The title refers to Chūshingura, the dramatization of the historical episode of the 47 rōnin, widely popular in kabuki and bunraku theater; Act V is traditionally a poignant roadside scene. The print combines a fashionable mitate reimagining with bijin-ga or pictures of beautiful women in the foreground and the violent action of the act in the small upper cartouche. The source provides no detailed description, so the precise identification of the gesture remains probable rather than certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

Utamaro was famous for his okubi-e or large-head portraits of women, but he also produced series linking fashionable beauties to famous theater scenes, such as this Chūshingura parody that transposes a samurai revenge drama onto everyday female figures.

What holds my attention here is the surface. I see the cream colored paper with its fibrous texture and those very fine black outlines typical of nishiki-e. I notice how the standing woman’s black kimono and salmon pink obi contrast with the kneeling woman’s grayish green kimono, and how the small dark green mesh bag looks about to give way. The folding screen with the twisted pine is pristine, with deep greens and soft ochres, and below I can still make out the other bag and the white rolls.

For me this print is like observing two skies at once. In the foreground the scene is intimate and luminous, with flat light and no marked shadows, like a midday observation; two women in dark and light kimonos negotiate over a small green bag held between their hands. In the small inset at the upper left another universe appears, distant and violent, with a swordsman in an orange loincloth over a fallen man beside bundles of yellowish straw. It is a zoom inside the print.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see two ladies who look like they are playing tug of war with a little green bag with a reddish string. The one standing, in her black kimono and pink obi, holds it tight with both hands and looks down. The other one is kneeling on the floor, in a gray kimono with little white patterns, and lifts her hands like saying please give it to me, and you can see her little feet. Behind them there is a folding screen with a funny twisted pine tree.
