What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical color woodblock print on aged, matte paper, dominated by grey-beige tones with rust orange, dark green, and black. In the foreground, a shirtless man seen from behind twists to the right, gripping a long thin stick with both hands. He wears only a dark green work garment tied at the waist with a red cord, leaving his back, arms, and legs bare; one foot presses near the fallen figure. On the floor before him, a woman in a loose, striped tan kimono recoils, her mouth open and eyes raised. She clutches the stick and a large dark-red broom, her bare leg extended and her hair partly undone with a white cloth. Standing over her at right, a taller woman in a rust-colored kimono leans in, holding a tall candlestick whose small flame tilts; her elaborate black coiffure is pierced by long pins. At the left edge sit a basin and kettle, and a small cup lies overturned at lower right. In the upper left corner, a rectangular inset shows two other men, one seated in reddish robes and one standing in black holding a lantern. Vertical Japanese text runs beside the inset, and the artist's signature appears at lower left.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the raised stick and the woman's raised hand at the center, then follow the standing woman's gaze downward. Next, look at the small inset in the upper left: that calmer, more martial scene changes the main brawl from a simple household quarrel into a theatrical parallel. Finally, notice the broom, kettle, and fallen cup, which turn heroic props into everyday objects.
ContextContexto
This color woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1754–1806), dated to the late 1790s and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, is titled Chushingura: Act XI of The Storehouse of Loyalty. Chushingura is the famous Japanese play, performed in kabuki and bunraku, about the revenge of the forty-seven rōnin, whose eleventh act is the climactic attack. Utamaro, a leading ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period (1615–1868), here probably reimagines that heroic episode as a contemporary domestic scene, a playful substitution common in Edo prints. The exact identities of the figures in the main scene are not known from the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso
In the play, Act XI is the long-awaited night attack by the forty-seven rōnin; here, the weapons have shrunk to a stick and a broom, and the battlefield is a room lit by a single candle.

I keep looking at the matte, aged paper, with those grays and beiges that have settled over time. The rusty orange of the kimono and the dark green of the work garment remain intense, but the black of the hairstyle and the red of the cord show me where the pigment held best. At the bottom right the overturned little cup and the tilted flame of the candlestick make me think of a frozen instant, a sudden movement that left everything suspended.

What captivates me most is that small light. The tall candlestick holds a little flame that leans, as if the air from the struggle were pushing it. In a scene of grayish and beige tones, that warm speck is the only sun. Above, in the inset panel, another light appears: the lantern carried by the man in black. Two artificial lights at night, like two tiny moons watching the conflict below.

It looks like they are playing really rough! A man with no shirt grabs a long stick and a lady on the floor will not let go, even though she is hugging a big red broom. The other lady standing lights the scene with a little candle that tilts from all the movement. A little cup has already fallen over and they must be upset. Up in a little window two more men watch with a small lantern, as if spying on the fight.
