Triptych of woodblock prints, ink and color on paper
What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal triptych composed of three adjoining sheets forms one continuous interior, open to a garden. On the left, two women enter in profile, wearing salmon-red kimonos; one carries a wide black obi and sash patterned with gold and cream motifs, the other lets a green-gold fabric fall behind her. All except one wear their hair gathered up, with combs, pins and pale ribbons fanning out. In the centre panel, a knotted cherry branch with small pink blossoms crosses before a bamboo fence, where a tiny bird perches. Below, a woman kneels in a red kimono embroidered with paler motifs, while another standing pair — one in a white-and-red geometric pattern, the other in black with fans — looks toward the right. There, on beige tatami, stands a low brazier with a small figure inside it, and two women are seated around a large open book on a low desk. The woman at the back holds a brush, turns her face aside and lets her long dark hair fall loose. Fine black line, flat areas of faded red, pink, black and olive, and the creamy tone of the aged paper dominate. Delicate vertical inscriptions appear along the edges.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start on the left with the pair standing, then follow the cherry branches toward the centre until you reach the woman with her hair loose. Notice how that single detail sets her apart from all the elaborate coiffures, and only then observe the open book before her.
ContextContexto
This triptych by Utagawa Toyokuni (1769–1825), dated to the mid- or late 1790s, was made in Japan during the Edo period (1615–1868). It is executed in woodblock printing, with ink and colour on paper. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, two courtesans from the Ōgiya house are entering an open pavilion, while another group gathers around a hibachi inside. At the desk sits Hanaōgi, Ōgiya's most celebrated courtesan in the late 1700s, noted for her knowledge of poetry and her skill in calligraphy. It is not known exactly which specific outing or day the scene records; it is probably an idealised spring gathering rather than a precise event.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual observation: Hanaōgi is the only figure whose long hair falls loose over her shoulders, while every companion wears her hair dressed and adorned — that intimate contrast, more than her clothing, marks her status in the scene.

I pause to notice how paper and color breathe in this triptych. I see three joined sheets forming one interior open to the garden, with creamy tatami mats and very fine black lines holding everything together. I look at the faded reds and salmon tones of the kimonos, the black of the obi with golden details, and the olive green that has settled over time. I am drawn to the cherry branch crossing the center and the small brazier on the tatami. It is a woodblock print in ink and color on paper, and its delicacy asks for low light and close looking.

When I look at this spring scene I think of spring as a natural clock. The clue here is that gnarled cherry branch with small pink blossoms in front of the bamboo fence, and even a little bird perched there marks the season for us. The triptych does not record an exact day, but an idealized gathering from the late 1790s, yet it works like a poetic calendar from the Edo period. I picture the seven women in that soft light, between pavilion and garden, celebrating the brief moment when everything blooms.

I love all the kimonos! I count seven women and they each have different hairstyles with combs and ribbons that look like little fans. Two are coming in from the left in red fabrics and one has a huge black sash. In the middle there is a branch with pink flowers and a tiny bird. On the other side there is a brazier with a little figure inside and two women sitting looking at a giant book. One has super long hair and holds a brush as if she is about to write something pretty.
