What you would seeLo que verías

A nearly square etching in very dark sepia-brown ink on cream paper, surrounded by wide, quiet margins. The scene is a nighttime street filled with a dense crowd. In the center, a young violinist in profile, instrument raised to the chin and bow extended, performs before dozens of closely packed faces that catch a faint light and turn pale against the darkness. Around the musician stand adults and small children in long coats, dresses, aprons, and hats; some hold hands, others carry bags or baskets. In the right foreground, women and girls seen from the side or from behind form a dark frame, while on the left a silhouetted figure in a hat walks away from the music, creating a counterpoint to the still listeners. Behind the crowd rise tall, block-like apartment buildings with scarcely visible windows, rendered as heavy shadows. The sky is not empty: thousands of fine, curved, parallel hatch marks arc overhead like a dark vault. The ground is built from horizontal strokes, giving it a rough, grainy texture and the sense of a poorly lit pavement. A soft glow at the left seems to come from a streetlamp or a shop window. Below the image, at right, a blue-ink handwritten dedication and the artist's signature contrast sharply with the somber print.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the pale faces in the center and find the violinist holding the scene together. Then move to the dark edges: on the left a passerby walks away, on the right several figures listen in profile. Finally, look up at the hatched sky and the almost windowless buildings, which turn a street performance into an intimate, enclosed moment.

ContextContexto

Little Street Singers is an etching dated 1902 by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859–1923), a Swiss-born artist recorded by the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds this print as a Gift of Ralph King. Steinlen is widely known for his images of working-class urban life, street crowds, and performers in Paris, although the exact street shown here is not identified and is not known from the source data. The handwritten inscription at lower right, dated October 30, 1903, appears to be a cordial dedication from the artist; it probably refers to a later presentation of an impression printed from the 1902 plate.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I am drawn to this almost square etching in very dark sepia brown ink on cream paper. I look at the hatching: thousands of curved parallel little lines building the black vault of the sky and the horizontal strokes of the rough granular pavement. The densest ink builds the massive buildings and the compact crowd, while a soft light lets faces pale around the violinist. At the lower right, the handwritten dedication in blue ink from 1903 contrasts with the dark solemnity and reminds me of the care in preserving quiet margins and signature.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I see no real stars, but an invented sky made of curved hatching. Those arched little lines above the street work like a black vault enclosing the nighttime crowd beneath tall dark buildings. I picture the scene without modern streetlights: just a faint glow on the left, perhaps a lantern, barely reaching the pale faces near the violinist. Night here is not empty, it is a drawn dome that makes the street concert feel intimate amid urban life.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I am an eight year old girl and I see lots of people together at night listening to music. In the middle there is a young person with his violin and bow stretched out, playing for everyone. Next to him there are kids like me, in long coats, holding hands, and ladies with bags and baskets who stayed to listen. On the right there are girls seen from behind watching and on the left a man with a hat walking away who is not listening. Above, the sky is all scribbled as if it were a little black blanket.

What color is the handwritten ink of the dedication at the bottom right?

    HintPista

Look for the signature and a small handwritten note that contrasts with the dark brown of the print.

  2. #2

What instrument is the young person in the center playing with an extended bow?

    HintPista

It is a string instrument, held against the chin and played with a bow.

  3. #3

What shapes the night sky above the crowd with thousands of parallel little lines?

    HintPista

Look up: the lines arch like a roof covering the street.
