What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a vertical black-and-white lithograph on creamy paper, surrounded by wide, pale margins. Inside the dense, heavily shaded central rectangle, three figures move through a wooded clearing. On the left, a bulky figure seen from behind leans forward with one arm hanging down, while the other hand raises a thin stick or drumstick; a shaggy, rippling cloth covers the hips and thighs, leaving bare calves and feet visible. At center, a luminous woman advances toward the viewer, head tilted, one arm curved above her head, her semi-nude body wrapped in hazy veils and furs; her pale skin stands out sharply against the darkness. On the right, in shadow, another figure lifts a round tambourine above a barely visible face. The background is a black mass of foliage with a patch of light at upper left. The grainy, hatched strokes make fabrics and shadows seem to vibrate. On the ground below lies an overturned cup or vessel. Outside the scene, in the lower-right margin, a small sketch of a nude woman with a raised arm serves as a kind of footnote. Below the image is the signature “h. Fantin,” with faint handwritten numbers above.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the bright central woman, almost glowing against the black foliage, then move left to the figure seen from behind. Next, look for the raised tambourine on the right and the overturned vessel on the ground. Finally, step outside the main rectangle: the tiny sketch in the lower-right margin changes the print from a finished scene into a glimpse of the artist's working process.

ContextContexto

According to the source, *Bacchus* is a lithograph made in 1903 by French artist Henri Fantin-Latour (1836–1904), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art as a gift of Ralph King. Fantin-Latour is best known for still lifes and portraits, but throughout his career he also produced imaginative lithographs inspired by mythology, literature, and music. The title refers to Bacchus, the Roman god of wine — Dionysus in Greek tradition — and his ecstatic retinue. It is not known for certain which figure, if any, represents the god himself; the scene probably evokes his female followers, associated with dance, music, and trance in classical myth.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: in the lower-right margin there is a second, much smaller nude figure with one arm raised. This kind of small sketch in the margin, known in printmaking as a remarque, turns the sheet into something more than a single image — it preserves a variation on the main scene's dancing gesture.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Who might each figure be, and why does the title name Bacchus if the god is not clearly identifiable?¿Quién podría ser cada figura y por qué el título nombra a Baco si el dios no se identifica con claridad?
  2. How do the contrast between the luminous central body and the black foliage change the feeling of the dance?¿Cómo cambia la sensación de la danza el contraste entre el cuerpo luminoso del centro y el follaje negro?
  3. What does the small sketch in the margin add that the main scene alone would not have?¿Qué aporta el pequeño boceto del margen que no tendría la escena principal por sí sola?

I focus on the materiality of this 1903 lithograph. The central rectangle is saturated with grainy black on that creamy paper with wide margins, and that makes me look at how Fantin-Latour built light with fine hatching. The pale figure in the center glows because the foliage background is a dense, dark mass. Below, the overturned cup and the bare feet get lost among shadows and the friction of the mark. I am intrigued by the remarque in the margin, that small sketch I must also preserve as part of the work.

I see this scene like a night sky in a forest clearing. The background is an almost total darkness, like the space between stars, and at the upper left a patch of light opens like a moon between clouds. The luminous woman in the center is like a constellation moving toward us, while the other two shadowy figures spin around her like satellites. The raised tambourine is a pale disc, a small eclipse hiding a face. Everything vibrates between shadow and flash.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like they are dancing in the forest at night and making a lot of noise. The lady in the middle shines a lot and moves her arms as if dancing to invisible music. On one side there is someone seen from behind with a fuzzy little tail and a wand in the hand, like leading the party. On the other side someone covers the face with a round tambourine. On the ground there is a little cup lying on its side, I think they dropped it while dancing. Outside the drawing there is another tiny lady drawn.
