What you would seeLo que verías

The photograph shows the two sides of a small rectangular bronze plaque, side by side against a smooth gray background that darkens at the top. Both faces share a warm, matte brown-gold tone, with slightly grainy texture, soft wear, and darker shading in the recesses. On the left face, in low relief, a woman is shown in strict left-facing profile, filling most of the height. She wears a tall, full bonnet tied under her chin, with a ruffled, pleated edge framing her forehead and small gathered bows; a wide collar or shawl crosses her chest, fastened with a small cross. Her expression is serious, her gaze distant, her nose and chin firmly modeled. At the bottom, raised block letters read “LORRAINE,” partly integrated into the base. On the right face, a landscape occupies the lower and central area: a Gothic cathedral with tall windows, buttresses, and a slender spire rises on a hill, with smaller roofs, a fortified tower, and a bridge with arches in the foreground. The upper right sky is almost empty, with a faint circular trace that may suggest a moon. The relief is shallower and more linear here. A small signature is barely visible at the lower right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the woman's profile on the obverse and notice how her raised bonnet and gaze lead your eye toward the word at the base. Then turn to the reverse: the plain sky makes the cathedral's vertical lines stand out. Comparing the two sides changes the piece from an individual portrait into an image of regional belonging.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this bronze medallion is by French artist Ernesta Robert-Mérignac (1849–1933) and is dated broadly to 1864–1921, within her lifetime; the museum classifies it as 20th-century French metalwork in Decorative Art and Design. It was a gift of Lawrence Hitchcock. The word “LORRAINE” identifies the region in northeastern France evoked by the woman's dress and by the cathedral landscape on the reverse. The source does not identify the sitter or the specific building, so both remain unknown; it is probably a commemorative or regional-identity plaque rather than a coin.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although it is called a medallion, it is not round: its rectangular, plaque-like format makes the two sides read almost like facing pages of a small bronze book.

  1. What relationship is created between the anonymous woman and the cathedral by placing them on opposite sides of the same object?¿Qué relación se crea entre la mujer anónima y la catedral al colocarlas en caras opuestas del mismo objeto?
  2. How does a heavy, durable material like bronze change the way a regional identity is remembered?¿Cómo cambia un material pesado y duradero como el bronce la manera de recordar una identidad regional?
  3. What does this plaque gain or lose by showing a type of traditional dress rather than a named individual?¿Qué gana o pierde esta placa al mostrar un traje tradicional típico en lugar de una persona con nombre?

What interests me most is the material and its age. This is a small bronze with a warm, matte golden brown tone and a slightly grainy surface with soft, even wear. Notice how light catches the raised areas and leaves darker shadows in the hollows, especially around the pleated bonnet, the little cross at the neck and the letters at the bottom. That wear is not damage, it is the trace of time and handling that has gently smoothed the edges.

I kept looking at the reverse, the landscape side. The lower part is full of details: the cathedral with its spire, the rooftops, the tower and the arched bridge. In contrast, the sky at the upper right is almost empty, and if you look closely there is a very faint circular mark. I cannot say for sure it is the moon, the record says it might suggest it, but I love to imagine it there, as if the artist left a little nighttime wink above the hill.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two golden chocolate cookies placed side by side. On one there is a lady in strict profile looking seriously to the left, with a big puffy bonnet that covers her head and a tiny cross on her chest. At the bottom it says LORRAINE in letters you could touch. On the other there is a castle with a very tall pointy church and a bridge with arches. I like that one is of a person and the other is of a place.
