lithograph
What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal black-and-white lithograph on cream paper with visible margins. Above the scene, at upper left, there is a short passage of musical notation, and at upper right a handwritten inscription reading “H. Berlioz Ballet des Troyens”; the artist’s signature appears at lower right. The image shows a group of about seven female figures dancing at night in a dark clearing among dense trees. At the center, a luminous woman raises her arms and waves a pale veil above her head; her face turns toward the viewer and her body seems to be the source of light for the whole composition. Like the others, she wears a long, rough, frayed garment—something like straw, hair or foliage—that covers part of her torso and legs and swirls with her turning movement. On the left, one dancer in profile throws her head back while another twists with an arm raised. On the right, seen from behind, a figure holds a torch or branch aloft beside a bare-breasted dancer with an outstretched arm, while a seated woman on the ground watches. Behind them, temple columns are barely suggested among the shadows. The grainy line, soft contrasts and blurred edges make the bodies emerge from the gloom like apparitions.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the bright veiled figure in the center, then follow the arms and twisted bodies outward into the darkness. Notice how the dancers’ rough, hair-like garments blur the boundary between bodies, clothing and landscape. The small musical staff above the image changes the reading: this is not just a dance, but an attempt to make music visible.
ContextContexto
Henri Fantin-Latour (1836–1904) made this lithograph in 1893. The handwritten inscription identifies its subject as the ballet from Les Troyens by composer Hector Berlioz. Fantin-Latour, a French artist best known for his flower still lifes and group portraits, produced many lithographs inspired by music in the later part of his career, especially works by Berlioz and Wagner. Rather than illustrating a precise, identifiable moment, he evokes the atmosphere of a musical passage through movement, shadow and dreamlike figures. The work belongs to the Prints Department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which received it as a Gift of Ralph King.

Curious detailDato curioso
Above the scene, at upper left, Fantin-Latour printed a few bars of actual musical notation — the score itself becomes part of the image, like a caption you could in principle hum.

I focus on the material side, this black and white lithograph on cream paper from 1893 by Henri Fantin-Latour keeps wide margins and a soft grain typical of the lithographic stone. I notice the musical notation on top and the handwritten inscription H. Berlioz Ballet des Troyens, with the signature below. The contrast between the deep black of the nocturnal forest and the pale veil in the center is delicate, and I worry how light and humidity might alter those subtle chiaroscuro effects and that warm paper over time.

For me this night is not just darkness, it is a scenic sky. The seven dancing figures look like constellations turning in a clearing among dense trees, with temple columns in the background like an ancient horizon. The central woman lifts a pale veil that works like a moon, lighting the frayed costumes and casting soft shadows. The figure with a torch on the right is like a comet. Fantin-Latour does not illustrate literally, he translates the music of Berlioz into light and half shadow, as if the ballet were happening under the stars.

They look like fairies dancing secretly in the forest at night! The one in the middle has a shiny veil and seems like the leader because she glows the most and looks at us. They all wear straw or leafy costumes that move when they spin. One throws her head back, another lifts her arm and another holds a torch like it is an adventure. One is sitting and watching and in the back you can see columns of a hidden temple. I like how everything looks blurry, like a dream with music.
