What you would seeLo que verías
This is a black-and-white lithograph on cream-toned paper, drawn with loose, rapid strokes that at times become almost scribbled. The scene opens beneath the very high roof of an industrial hall, whose dark framework borders the top and sides like an irregular arch. In the foreground, taking up the lower half, dozens of long steel bars stretch diagonally in stacked rows that converge toward the center and lead the eye into the distance. Their circular ends are visible, some coiled or bundled, shaded with dense hatching. Among them walk tiny workers, little more than black silhouettes leaning, pushing, carrying, or gathered in small groups; their scale makes the factory seem enormous. On the left and right rise columns, scaffolding, cranes, and metal walkways drawn with a web of vertical and crossing lines. In the background, an overhead crane bridge spans the hall and other structures fade into a very white, almost empty light, flecked with faint curls of smoke or steam. Above, at right, the hook of a crane hangs alone. Light enters diffusely, without hard shadows, and the grainy texture of the lithographic stone shows in the worn blacks and unfinished edges, where the drawing dissolves into the paper.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First, follow the steel bars in the foreground toward the bright center of the hall, and notice how they turn the floor into lines of perspective. Then compare the size of the workers with the roof, the columns, and the overhead cranes. Finally, look for the empty hook hanging at upper right: a small detail that reminds us the work is paused in the drawing, but continuous in the factory.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this work is titled English War Work: Steel Bars for Shells, was made in 1916 by the American artist Joseph Pennell (1857–1926), and belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of Salmon P. Halle. It is a lithograph from his series on English war work. In 1916, during the First World War and before the United States entered the conflict in 1917, Pennell documented British factories involved in munitions production. Here, the steel bars are the raw material for artillery shells. The source does not identify the specific factory shown, so its exact location is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
A striking visual detail is that the only crane hook clearly visible, at upper right, hangs empty and still, while dozens of workers and tons of steel below suggest a factory in full operation.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does the difference in scale between the workers and the factory change the way we think about industrial labor?¿Cómo cambia nuestra idea del trabajo industrial la diferencia de escala entre los obreros y la fábrica?
- What does the image suggest, even though it shows no weapons or battlefield, about how a modern war is produced?¿Qué sugiere la imagen, sin mostrar armas ni un campo de batalla, sobre cómo se produce una guerra moderna?
- If the sound and heat of this place could be drawn, what would change in the image?

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I notice how the lithographic stone left its grain on this cream paper. The blacks are uneven: there are dense hatchings on the steel bars, soft worn areas and unfinished edges where the line dissolves. That almost empty white in the background is the paper itself breathing through the faint smoke. Pennell worked quickly in 1916, with loose and sketchy lines that we respect when preserving it, because every smudge tells how this scene of English war work was printed.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
That huge roof reminds me of looking at the night sky. The dark framework forms an arch like a celestial vault and the steel bars aligned diagonally are like trails converging to a vanishing point, like shooting stars guiding the eye to the bright background. The tiny workers look like astronauts in a vast station. That solitary hook at the top right is like a moon hanging there. Everything feels monumental in scale compared to the human figure.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a city of giant sticks! I see lots of long bars piled up like huge pencils going to the back. The workers are super tiny, like little ants carrying things between the sticks. Up top there is a lonely hook hanging, as if it is going to fish for something. Everything is drawn with quick little lines, as if someone made it in a hurry. In the back there is white light and little puffs of smoke. I like searching for the tiny people hidden among the bars.
