What you would seeLo que verías

A lithograph in warm grey and black ink on cream paper depicting a sprawling industrial complex in strong diagonal perspective. In the foreground, railway tracks converge toward the distance and an open tram or locomotive crowded with tiny figures, sketched with quick strokes to suggest workers, moves along the rails. To the right, a long multi-level structure with scaffolding and metal walkways holds crowds of workers rendered as small dark silhouettes that read as dense smudges against the white paper. At center and in the background, tall chimneys and cylindrical ovens release vast plumes of smoke and steam, drawn with cross-hatching, scribbled shading, and smudged washes that rise and dissolve into the sky, creating a hazy, dramatic atmosphere. Light seems to filter through the smoke, leaving very pale areas with almost no ink that suggest glare. On the left, rounded gas holders and electrical towers are visible. The artist's pencil signature appears at the bottom center. The overall texture is granular, typical of lithography, with soft transitions between light and shadow and a sense of movement and monumental scale that dwarfs the human figures beside the machinery.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the central cloud of smoke that dominates the composition and follow it upward until it fades into the sky. Then move your eyes down to the walkways on the right and notice how many tiny human silhouettes sustain the scene. Observe how the white of the paper acts as light amid so much dark ink.

ContextContexto

This is a 1916 lithograph by American artist Joseph Pennell titled English War Work: By-Products, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It belongs to a series Pennell made in England during World War I to document the British industrial war effort. The image shows a by-products plant, probably linked to coke, steel or munitions production. The style blends documentary realism with an industrial sublime aesthetic common at the time. The source data does not specify the exact location depicted or details of the commission, but Pennell is known to have worked with official British support to publicize these scenes.

I focus on how this 1916 lithograph is made, I love the grainy texture typical of the technique and how the warm gray and black tones on cream paper create light and shadow, I see the smudges and crosshatching that form the dense smoke rising from the chimneys and cylindrical ovens, that contrast between the almost white glowing areas and the dark smudges intrigues me, everything feels fragile yet monumental at once and I wonder how to preserve those subtle cream tones so they do not fade over time

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this factory like an inverted constellation, the chimneys are like earthly volcanoes throwing clouds that cover the sky just like a nebula, it strikes me how light filters through the vapor and leaves bright gaps on the paper, they look like stars amid the haze, the train tracks converge like orbits carrying tiny workers, just little specks, toward the energy center of the furnaces and the rounded gas holders, it is an industrial universe that makes humans seem tiny against its own immense and smoky scale

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This factory looks like it belongs to giants! There is so much smoke everywhere coming out of the tall chimneys and it looks like a black cloud that hides the sky, I see the train tracks getting smaller in the distance and a tram full of tiny people who look like little black dots, on the right there are walkways with lots of workers huddled together like little ants, I like to look for the whitish lights among the smoke because they seem to glow, everything looks big and noisy and a little mysterious like a robot city
