What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a rectangular textile photographed fully extended, almost flat, against a plain off-white background. Slightly wider than it is tall, it has irregular edges, small frayed areas at the corners, and a surface where the grain of the woven wool is clearly visible. Its composition is organized into horizontal bands with a nearly symmetrical rhythm. Three broad salmon-orange fields alternate with two narrower striped bands in beige, dark brown, and black. In the orange fields, black crosses of varying heights are distributed in two rows around a continuous stepped line in ochre yellow, like a sequence of small squared meanders. The striped bands repeat fine parallel lines that create a strong contrast with the more open, spacious areas around the crosses. The light is even and diffuse, with no harsh shadows, allowing the matte texture, slight variations in color, minor imperfections in the weaving, and a small dark mark near the upper right corner to be appreciated. No people, landscape, or narrative scene appears: the visual effect rests entirely on repetition, spacing, and the balance between warm color, black, and natural wool tones.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall rhythm of the horizontal bands, then move closer to a single salmon-colored field. Compare the crosses: their slight changes in size and spacing reveal the hand of the weaver. Finally, notice how the yellow stepped line links them without ever touching them.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this rug was made by an unknown artist between about 1895 and 1905, within the Navajo (Diné) culture of the Native North American Southwest. It is handspun wool in tapestry weave and was donated by J. H. Wade. Its title indicates that, although catalogued as a rug, its format follows the style of a woman's wearing blanket. During those years, Diné weaving was probably adapting increasingly to an external market for rugs, without abandoning earlier blanket formats. The specific meaning of its crosses and stepped lines is not documented.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: none of the black crosses is exactly alike. Some are compact plus signs and others are taller, a subtle trace of hand weaving within an apparently strict geometric order.

If you look closely, you will notice what excites me most: the grain of the hand-spun wool. It is not a perfect surface, it shows slight color variations, a small dark spot near one corner and slightly frayed edges, traces of its age and use. See how the three wide bands in salmon orange alternate with the two striped bands in beige, brown and black. The tapestry weave is very even and the soft, diffuse light reveals its matte texture clearly.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I see this rectangle I imagine an orderly sky. Those three orange bands are like three latitudes and the black crosses are stars placed in two rows, all following a yellow stepped constellation that moves like squared meanders. The other bands, with fine beige and dark stripes, feel like quiet intervals between star clusters. We do not know what those crosses and stepped lines meant to the weaver, but the almost symmetrical rhythm reminds me of how we search for patterns in the heavens.

It looks like a little blanket for a giant made of stripes. There are three big orange sections with small black crosses on top and below, and in the middle of each one there is a yellow path that goes up and down like tiny stairs. Between those sections there are two bands with many thin beige, brown and black lines. I like to count the crosses and follow the little path with my finger. It looks soft but also a bit worn at the little edges.
