wool (handspun): tapestry weave
What you would seeLo que verías
A wide horizontal rectangular textile is shown flat, filling almost the entire image against a plain light background. Its ground is a faded salmon-pink, uneven in tone, with softer and more saturated bands that suggest hand-dyed wool and the passage of time. A narrow cream and pale-pink border frames the interior field. Inside, three staggered rows of large serrated diamonds create a vigorous rhythm: some are outlined in deep green with cream interiors and pink centers, others in yellow, and a few toward the right have purplish edges. Between them sit smaller diamonds divided into green and cream quarters, like compact geometric flowers or spinning shapes. The diamond edges are not smooth; they step and spike outward, giving the pattern a vibrating, almost electric quality. The weave texture is fine but visible, with horizontal threads and slight irregularities. The left edge shows worn fringe and small losses, while the corners and lower border are slightly uneven rather than mechanically straight. Faint stains, areas of fading, and tiny breaks in pattern near the top and bottom center add to its age. The overall scale feels that of a domestic rug, meant to be seen across its full surface rather than in a single focal point.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the overall rhythm: three rows of diamonds that seem to advance and recede across the pink ground. Then move closer to the small quartered diamonds between them, where green and cream alternate like a spinning pattern. Finally, look for asymmetries in outlines and color; those slight departures from perfect repetition reveal the handwoven making and soften the geometry.
ContextContexto
The source identifies this piece as a rug, dated circa 1890–1900, made by an unknown author from the Navajo (Diné) culture of the Native North American Southwest. It is woven in handspun wool using tapestry weave, and is now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of J. H. Wade. Diné weaving is widely known for wool textiles with strong geometric patterning. In the late nineteenth century, many woven pieces were increasingly produced as rugs for trade beyond their communities, though the specific use, place of manufacture, and maker of this example are not documented in the source. The weaver's name is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: not all of the large diamonds are outlined the same way — some have deep green borders, others yellow or purplish edges, so the apparently regular grid becomes more varied the longer you look at it.

I pause on what time has made visible. The salmon pink is unevenly faded, with paler bands and stronger ones that speak of hand-dyed wool and years of use. I notice the fine weave and horizontal threads, the small losses along the fringe on the left and corners that are not perfectly straight. The serrated diamonds, in deep green and yellow, have stepped edges and centers that repeat with subtle variations. Nothing here is mechanical; each interruption reminds me this rectangular rug was woven by hand.

I see this rug as an ordered sky. The salmon pink ground is like a soft sunset where geometric constellations float. The large serrated diamonds line up in three offset rows, with green and yellow outlines, and between them the small quartered diamonds in green and cream spin like compact stars. Their zigzag edges vibrate, almost electric. I like counting rhythms and repetitions, how the violet touches on the right shift the pattern, as if one area of the sky had different light.

This rug looks like a bouncy game! I see big diamonds with spiky teeth, some with green borders and others with yellow borders, and inside they have cream with a little pink dot. Between them there are tiny little diamonds split into four that look like spinning flowers. Everything sits on a salmon pink that is not even, as if it was washed a lot. I like the light border and the worn little fringes on one side. If I stare, it feels like the diamonds move in rows.
