What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the image, against a smooth background that fades from dark grey at the top to almost white at the bottom, stands a round, flattened ceramic object, photographed frontally and slightly from above. Its silhouette is nearly a perfect disc, with softly rounded edges and a gently domed or uneven face. At the upper edge rise two small, short, parallel tabs or loops, set slightly apart, with squarish contours and small openings barely visible in profile. The surface is a muted celadon: greyish green, pale and dusty, more olive in the shadowed areas and lighter where the light falls. A fine network of crackle covers it, with thin, irregular lines branching like dry earth or ice, plus tiny dark specks, a small pitted hole left of center, and a faint raised dot near the right tab. The incised decoration is extremely subtle, almost ghostly, and is distinguished more by changes in light than by color. The piece rests on a barely visible point at the bottom and casts a soft, diffuse shadow beneath it. No other objects, people, or scale references appear, so its actual size cannot be judged from the photograph alone.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the overall shape, almost like a flat, suspended coin, and then move closer to the surface. Only after that pause does the faint incised design emerge. The two small tabs at the top change the reading: it is not just a disc, but a functional piece meant to be lifted, tied, or handled.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is a work by an unknown maker from 12th-century Korea, during the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392), in stoneware with celadon glaze and incised and carved decoration. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of John L. Severance. The museum description identifies this type of vessel as a kundika, used with water in Buddhist purification rituals, and notes that its incised flying phoenix is unusual compared with the more common willow motif. There is a discrepancy in the source itself: the title calls it a lid and mentions a parrot, while the photograph shows a view in which the bird is barely distinguishable. Its exact use within the set is therefore not fully confirmed here.

Curious detailDato curioso
The grey-green color of Goryeo celadon comes largely from small amounts of iron oxide in the glaze, transformed during firing in a low-oxygen kiln; a slight change in the kiln atmosphere could shift the tone toward blue, grey, or olive.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a restorer I focus on what the photo actually shows: a stoneware disc with a pale, dusty celadon glaze in greyish green, covered by a fine network of crackle that looks like dry earth. I see two small upper tabs with barely visible holes and tiny dark speckles on the slightly domed surface. The incised decoration is ghostly and needs raking light to be seen, which reminds me how delicate it is to preserve this kind of incision without erasing its trace.

To me this flattened disc looks like a full moon captured in ceramic, with its pale olive tone and crackled surface like distant craters. It floats against a background fading from dark grey to almost white and casts a soft shadow below. I am intrigued that the record identifies it as a kundika for Buddhist water purification rituals, from 12th century Goryeo, and that its incised phoenix is uncommon compared to the more frequent willow motif, although in the photo the bird is barely distinguishable.

It looks like a giant cookie or a squashed moon colored grey-green, like pistachio dust. It has two little ears on top that look like tabs and it is all cracked like broken ice. I can hardly see the little drawing they say it has, I have to squint to look for it. I like that it shines a bit where the light hits it and that it has a small dimple on the left, as if someone touched it with a finger when it was still soft.
