wool (handspun and bayeta): tapestry weave

What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a rectangular textile panel, photographed vertically against an almost white background that reveals its full outline and a soft shadow along the edges. It fills most of the image. The composition is divided into three large horizontal zones: a wide dark brown, nearly black central field with no visible figures, flanked above and below by two broad bands of muted red. Each red band contains four cross-shaped motifs in a row, outlined in very dark blue-black and filled with paler red and fine horizontal lines. Small triangles in the same dark tone bite into the lateral edges. Between the center and the red fields are narrow stripes in red, pink, and dark blue, as well as serrated borders that recall small steps. The outer edges also close with a stepped dark band. The surface looks flat and matte, with the tight grain of weaving, subtle horizontal streaks, tiny specks, and a few almost imperceptible holes in the dark area. The corners end in short dark tassels, slightly untidy. Although the design is strongly symmetrical top to bottom, the crosses are not mechanically identical and the edges are not perfectly straight, giving the geometry a handmade, living quality.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the broad dark center and notice how much space is left unadorned. Then compare the upper and lower red bands: look for the crosses, the fine lines, and the small irregularities that reveal the handwork. The symmetry organizes the panel, but the close details break its perfection.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is one panel of a woman's dress, made by an unknown maker between 1870 and 1889 within the Navajo (Diné), Native North American culture of the Southwest. It is woven in wool —both handspun and bayeta— using tapestry weave, and it entered the museum as a gift from Mrs. Harriet E. McBride. In general terms, Diné women's dresses were traditionally formed by joining woven panels, so this piece should be understood as part of a garment, not as a complete dress. The weaver's name, its place of use, and its history before the donation are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: the eight crosses look identical from a distance, but up close their inner lines and proportions vary slightly, a trace of weaving done by hand without a printed pattern.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the meaning of this panel change when we remember it was part of a dress worn on a body, and not a flat picture on a wall?¿Cómo cambia el sentido de este panel cuando recordamos que formaba parte de un vestido llevado sobre un cuerpo, y no un cuadro plano en una pared?
  2. What effect does the large empty dark center produce between two such ordered and colorful bands?¿Qué efecto produce el gran centro oscuro y vacío entre dos franjas tan ordenadas y coloridas?
  3. What can the small variations in the crosses tell us about the time, the hand, and the decisions of the weaver?¿Qué nos pueden decir las pequeñas variaciones en las cruces sobre el tiempo, la mano y las decisiones de la tejedora?

I focus on what the weaving tells me about the maker’s hands. It is hand-spun wool and bayeta made with tapestry technique, visible in the tight grain, the subtle horizontal streaks and the tiny specks on the matte surface. The large central field in very dark brown almost black is flanked above and below by two wide bands in muted red with aligned cross motifs and stepped serrated edges. The crosses are not mechanically identical and the borders are not perfectly straight, and those small irregularities reveal its handmade lively character and the time held in every thread.

When I look at it I think of a night sky. That wide central field in very dark brown almost black feels like a vast silent void, framed above and below by two bands in muted red glowing like horizons. Each band holds four aligned cross motifs, which to me look like stars or constellations ordered in a row with fine horizontal lines inside. The stepped serrated borders and the thin lines in pink and dark blue remind me of old maps of the cosmos, where symmetry tries to bring balance and meaning to infinity.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a long little blanket with a giant dark brown part in the middle with no drawings. On the top and bottom there are red bands with four crosses in each one, like big x shapes with little lines inside and pointy edges that look like tiny stairs. Between the red and the dark part there are thin pink and dark blue lines. I like the messy little tassels on the corners, like tails. You can tell a machine did not make it because the crosses are not all exactly the same and that makes it prettier and special.
