What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical black-and-white etching presents a dramatic rocky and wooded landscape. In the foreground a small stream winds among uneven boulders and low tufts of grass; to the left a pale limestone cliff rises steeply, its craggy surface rendered with fine cross-hatching and topped with dense shrubs and stunted trees, with a thin waterfall spilling over its edge onto dark rocks below. To the right a thick, gnarled tree trunk dominates, its bark suggested by tight linear strokes and its full crown built up with stippling and layered flicks that create rich shadow and volume. Just behind this tree, on a rocky outcrop, two tiny figures stand, one with an outstretched arm pointing toward the valley, presumably Tobias and the angel. The middle ground opens onto a luminous valley with fields, scattered trees and a distant village of faint houses and towers. The upper third is sky, filled with streaked clouds and small flocks of birds in flight. Light seems to break through the center between the trees, and the strong contrast between deep black ink and the white of the paper creates depth, atmosphere and a sense of scale from intimate foreground to expansive distance.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large leaning tree on the right and follow its trunk up to the dense canopy to see how it frames the whole view. Then locate the two tiny figures on the outcrop and notice how they shift the scale from vast nature to human narrative. Finally observe the small waterfall and the bright distant valley to appreciate the interplay of light and ink.

Curious detailDato curioso

Anthonie Waterloo was especially renowned for his etchings of forests, and his prints were widely circulated across Europe, serving as models for landscape artists for more than a century even though few oil paintings by him survive.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator, I focus on this etching and the deep black ink on light paper that creates the forest’s depth. I look at the twisted trunk on the right with its hatched bark, the dark rocks in the stream, and the pale cliff on the left with its waterfall. The contrast between bright whites and deep blacks is well preserved, letting us appreciate the tiny strokes in the foliage and the hatched clouds in the sky.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I like to look at the sky that fills the upper third of the composition. Although it is a black-and-white print, you can see elongated clouds rendered with fine lines and those tiny flocks of birds crossing the air. The light seems to filter from the valley in the center, lighting up the village in the distance. It makes me think about how atmosphere and the scale of nature were represented in seventeenth-century landscapes.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This forest looks like an adventure! At the bottom there is a stream with lots of rocks and a little waterfall falling from a giant rock. On the right there is a super thick and crooked tree, as if it wanted to hug everything. And in the back, really tiny, there are two little people on a hill, one pointing toward the valley where you can see a small village. I imagine they are Tobias and his friend and they are going to walk a lot among the trees.
