What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal etching in black ink on cream-colored paper, surrounded by a wide margin and a fine line framing the scene. Across the lower third stretches a calm expanse of water, probably a river or canal. In the foreground it is crossed by horizontal strokes, small aquatic plants, dark specks, and broken reflections. At the center, upside down and slightly distorted, appears the long reflection of the windmill. Farther right, a trembling shadow suggests a tall, slender tree. The opposite bank forms a low strip of land covered with grass, reeds, and bushes drawn in short, dense lines. On the left, leafy trees with irregular crowns cluster together; in the center rises the dark windmill, conical in structure, with long blades, one of them nearly vertical. To the right are thickets, two small leaning trees, a low fence, and another solitary tree. The sky fills more than the upper half: almost empty, with only very faint streaks, tiny distant birds, and a few marks on the paper. At lower left a small initial can be made out; at lower right, outside the frame, is the artist's pencil signature, barely legible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the windmill, the only tall, dark shape that breaks the skyline. Then look down and find its long reflection in the water, where the landscape seems to repeat itself. Finally, notice how much of the image is left almost empty in the sky, and how that emptiness makes the small birds and shoreline grasses stand out.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this print is titled *Le bord au Gein*, by the Dutch artist Charles Nicolas Storm van 's-Gravesande (1841–1924). It is listed as an etching, in the Prints category, dated broadly to 1856–1921, and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art as a Gift of Ralph King. The Gein is probably the small river of that name in the Netherlands, although the source does not confirm the exact spot shown. The exact year of this impression is not known. Windmills, low banks, and still water were recurring motifs in Dutch landscape imagery.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: the windmill's reflection is almost as tall as the mill itself, because the water stretches its dark triangle downward and turns it into a second, wavering center of attention.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes in the scene when you follow the reflections instead of the objects on the bank?¿Qué cambia en la escena si sigues los reflejos en vez de los objetos de la orilla?
  2. Why might an artist leave so much of the sky almost blank in a landscape?¿Por qué un artista dejaría casi vacío tanto cielo en un paisaje?
  3. Does the windmill feel like a monument, a working tool, or simply another part of nature here?¿El molino se siente aquí como monumento, como herramienta de trabajo o como una parte más de la naturaleza?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the cream paper and the thin line framing the scene, because there I can read time. This etching by Storm van 's-Gravesande lives on subtle contrasts: the horizontal strokes of the water, the dark patches in the foreground and the inverted reflection of the windmill. At the lower left there is a small initial and at the lower right the pencil signature, barely legible. That wide margin is not empty, it protects the black ink and lets us see how the artist controlled the acid bite.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this print as if it were a night sky in negative. The sky takes up more than the upper half and is almost empty, barely with faint streaks and tiny birds in the distance, like very distant stars. Below, the calm water acts as a mirror and duplicates the dark windmill with long sails, one almost vertical. I like to think that the trembling reflection of the tree on the right is like a constellation shimmering over the Gein river.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the windmill is looking at itself in a water mirror! The water is calm and copies the windmill upside down, all wobbly and stretched. On the sides there are lots of little trees, some with fluffy tops on the left and other skinny leaning ones on the right, with a small fence. The sky is almost blank, only with tiny little birds. I like to hunt for the tiny plants and dark spots floating close to us.

  1. #1

In the center of the bank, what dark cone-shaped structure with long sails is reflected upside down in the water?

    HintPista

Look in the center of the print, on the strip of land with reeds, for the tall silhouette with one sail almost vertical.

  2. #2

What color is the paper where the black ink is printed, visible in the wide margin around the scene?

    HintPista

It is not pure white, look at the background and the margin outside the thin line framing the landscape.

  3. #3

How many main elements does the record list in its objects: the windmill, the river and what else?

    HintPista

Check the short object list on the record, it is three words in English.
