engraving
What you would seeLo que verías
A small, densely lined black-and-white engraving on aged ivory paper with a slightly speckled, matte texture. On the left, a round stone tower with arched openings at ground level and small circular windows above; from an upper window a woven wicker basket hangs by a thick rope, holding a bearded man in a cap and long robe who leans over the rim with his hands resting on the edge and gazes outward. Below, in the lower left foreground, a man sits on the stone pavement, his mouth open and one hand raised toward the figure in the basket. On the right foreground, a tight cluster of five or six standing onlookers in doublets, cloaks, feathered caps and light armor looks up; one wears a curved saber at his waist and points upward, another shields his eyes with his hand, while others gesture and crowd together, including a child clinging to an adult. The middle ground and background show a walled town with crenellated towers, pitched roofs and ruined masonry. The light is even, created entirely by cross-hatching that models drapery folds, stonework and faces. Near the top right the intertwined monogram G P is visible against the sky.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the hanging basket on the left tower and the isolated figure inside, then move to the animated crowd on the right and follow their pointing hands and upturned faces. Notice how the dense hatching connects the lone, exposed man above with the compact, jeering group below, turning a private trick into a public spectacle.
ContextContexto
This is an engraving by German printmaker Georg Pencz, active in Nuremberg, dated about 1541–42 and held in the Prints collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The print illustrates a widely circulated medieval legend in which the Roman poet Virgil is tricked by a woman and left hanging in a basket halfway up a tower to be mocked. The tale has no historical basis and was used in Renaissance popular imagery as a moralizing or satirical exemplum about love, deception and public shame. Details of its commission are not recorded in the source data.

I pause on the aged ivory paper and its grainy texture, which speaks of time passing and very careful printing. I notice the fine, dense linework of the metal engraving, with cross-hatching that gives volume to the cylindrical stone tower, the woven wicker basket and the folds of the tunics. The intertwined monogram G P at the upper right works like a discreet signature that confirms authorship without distracting from the scene.

I am always looking for high points to observe from, and here the cylindrical stone tower works like an improvised observatory. The bearded man with a cap is left suspended in the basket at mid-height, hanging by a thick rope, neither on the ground nor in the sky. I wonder what he sees from there: the walled city, the crenellated towers, the crowd below pointing and covering their eyes. It is a lesson in perspective and in how everything changes when you are left stranded between two worlds.

Poor man in the basket! He is up there all alone with his cap and long tunic, holding onto the edge and looking out. Down below a man sits on the stone ground shouting with his hand raised, and nearby a huddle of people with feathered caps and even a curved sword point up at him. It looks like a mean game where everyone stares and no one helps him down. I feel sorry for him and a little giggly too because he looks so awkward hanging there.
