Bobbin lace

What you would seeLo que verías

A long, narrow horizontal strip of bobbin lace lies against a deep, matte black background that intensifies its paleness. The piece has a straight, taut upper edge and a wavy, scalloped lower edge with tiny pointed picots. Its color is an aged ivory, shifting between pale cream, warm beige and soft bone where light and shadow catch the threads. The composition is airy and openwork, built from an intricate net of interlaced linen threads forming floral and foliate motifs. A denser, undulating ribbon weaves in a continuous serpentine line across the entire length, creating rhythmic S-curves. Flanking this ribbon are rosettes, six-petalled flowers, scrolling leaves and fine hexagonal ground mesh that lets the black show through. In the foreground the texture looks delicate and slightly irregular, with microscopic knots and raised, denser areas where threads cluster to give volume to petals. The background mesh is almost transparent, like a spiderweb. Near the right end a small folded tab of fabric is stitched on, and the hand-made edges show gentle unevenness and faint fraying that speak to age and manual craft.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the dense wavy ribbon that snakes along the center, it organizes the whole pattern. Then focus on the empty spaces, the black background shining through the tiny holes shows how fine each stitch is. Finally notice the lower edge with its scallops and picots, designed to flutter delicately when sewn to fabric.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a bobbin lace edging by an unknown maker dated to the 1700s and attributed to Flanders or Italy, both major historic centers for bobbin lace production. Bobbin lace is made by braiding and twisting many threads wound on bobbins around pins placed in a pattern on a pillow. In the 18th century such edgings were prized in European fashion to trim collars, cuffs, caps and veils. The exact workshop and artisan are not recorded, which is typical for textiles of this period that were often collective, anonymous work.

Curious detailDato curioso

In the 1700s, Flemish and Italian bobbin lace was so labor intensive that it was often worth more by weight than fine jewelry, and was regulated as a luxury good.

What stops me here is the fragility of each linen thread in yellowed ivory. I see the long narrow strip against the deep black background, with the straight upper edge and the lower edge scalloped into tiny points. The dense ribbon zigzagging through the center tells me about work on a pillow with bobbins and pins. I observe the almost transparent hexagonal mesh, the rosettes and leaves with volume built by thread buildup. I also notice the slight fold at the right end and the beautiful irregularities of handmade work from the eighteenth century.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this lace as if it were a constellation against a night sky. The deep black background makes the creamy pallor stand out like stars. The wavy ribbon in the center feels like the Milky Way meandering, and beside it the six-petaled rosettes and hexagonal meshes are open systems that let the void show through. That transparency and fine net of interlaced threads remind me of celestial maps. It is amazing that an anonymous work from Flanders or Italy from the eighteenth century can achieve that sense of infinity in such a delicate strip.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little white caterpillar making waves on a black blanket. The strip is long and skinny, straight on top and with tiny points like waves on the bottom. In the middle a chubby little snake zigzags along and on the sides there are little flowers with six petals, little leaves and hexagonal little windows where the black shows through. It feels soft but with tiny bumps where the thread makes the petals. I like counting the flowers and following with my finger the ribbon that dances from side to side without stopping.
