What you would seeLo que verías
A dark steel object floats diagonally against a plain ground that fades from medium gray at the top to almost white at the bottom, with nothing else in view. It is a horse's curb bit, photographed in three-quarter view: two long, curved cheekpieces form a kind of open U pointing downward, joined at the top by an articulated mouthpiece and, halfway down, by a fine chain of elongated links. The cheekpieces are flat, elongated, and slightly bowed; at the bottom each ends in a round rein ring — one clearly visible on the left, another darker and doubled on the right. Toward the middle of each cheek, a small cut-out shape juts inward, like a crest or flame. Near the lower ends, engraved zigzag lines and faint marks can be made out on the metal. The upper part is bulkier and more complex: oval, segmented beads with vegetal or geometric relief are threaded onto the mouth bar, along with small rings, hooks, and hanging pins. At the very top are elongated loops for straps. Soft light from the upper left creates silvery highlights along the edges and faint shadows beneath the cheeks. The surface is not smooth: it looks rough, pitted, and worn, in tones ranging from slate gray and very dark brown to dull silver.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the center, with the bulging articulated mouthpiece, then follow one long cheekpiece down to the rein ring to sense the leverage. Next, look for the tiny cut-out crests and the fine chain, which soften an otherwise severe mechanism.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this piece is titled Curb Bit, was made by an unknown maker around 1535 in Germany, and is made of steel. It belongs to the Arms and Armor category, within the Medieval Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it arrived as a gift of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Severance. A curb bit is part of a horse's bridle: the bar rests in the mouth and the long sidepieces act as levers when the rider pulls the reins. Who used this particular example, and on what occasions, is not known; it was probably made for controlled, formal riding rather than everyday work.

Curious detailDato curioso
A curb bit works as a lever: a small pull on the reins is amplified by the length of the sidepieces, which is why this type of bit allows very precise — and potentially very strong — signals.

I focus on the surface of this German steel from around 1535. It is not smooth or shiny: it looks rough, pitted and worn, with tones ranging from slate gray to very dark brown and dull silver. I notice the wear on the jointed mouthpiece and on the fine chain linking the two side shanks. Below, the rein rings and the engraved zigzag lines show faint marks of use and time. Above, the vegetal and geometric reliefs keep their volume despite corrosion. Everything speaks of artisanal skill and careful keeping.

Seeing this bit floating diagonally on a background fading from medium gray to almost white reminds me of an instrument suspended in space. It is a system of levers: two long curved shanks forming an open U facing down, joined at the top by the mouthpiece and in the middle by a small chain. When the rider pulls the lower rings, force is multiplied, like a constellation of pulleys. The upper eyelets for straps are anchoring points. Soft light from the upper left reveals silvery highlights and faint shadows, like phases of a celestial metal.

It looks like a giant dark metal U letter floating. It has two long curved legs with round rings at the bottom for reins and little elongated holes at the top for straps. In the middle there is a thin little chain joining them, like a tiny necklace. If you look closely, on each leg there is a little cutout shape that looks like a flame or a small crest. On top it has oval little balls with tiny plant drawings and little hooks hanging down. It does not shine much, it looks very old, rough and a bit pitted, as if a horse had used it a very long time ago.

What thin element with elongated links joins the two shanks at mid-height?
HintPista
It is fine, shines a little and hangs in the center between the two side pieces.
#3
At the bottom of each shank, what shape are the pieces where the reins are attached?
HintPista
Look at the bottom, they are round rings, one looks lighter on the left and another darker and doubled on the right.
