What you would seeLo que verías

Small horizontal black-and-white engraving with extremely fine linework on paper. In the foreground left stands Hercules, muscular, bearded and curly-haired, wearing a short fringed skirt and holding his massive club upright in his left hand; over his right arm hangs the skin of the Nemean Lion, its head, paws and tail dangling. Facing him, the servant Lichas steps forward holding out a long, heavy tunic with both hands, his face strained, his short tunic and laced boots visible. They meet on a paved ground before a classical façade with fluted columns, entablatures and pedimented windows. To the right in the background, a round domed building with arcades evokes an ancient city. Further back, two tiny figures struggle, one pulling the other by the neck. At the upper right a three-line Latin inscription appears, with the monogram HSB just below it. Light and volume are built through dense cross-hatching, with detailed textures for stone, fur and drapery, and a slightly aged paper tone with a thin border.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the contrast between the calm, monumental Hercules and the burdened Lichas presenting the cloth. Follow the folds of the tunic and the lion skin to appreciate the miniature precision. Notice the small scuffle in the background, which foreshadows the servant’s tragic fate.

ContextContexto

This is an engraving by Hans Sebald Beham (German, 1500–1550), dated 1542, part of a series of 12 prints on Hercules, as documented by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Beham belonged to the group known today as the Little Masters, German printmakers famed for tiny, highly detailed engravings prized by collectors of miniatures and curiosities. The series condenses the saga of Hercules, son of Jupiter and the mortal Alcmena, including three of his twelve canonical labors performed as penance — the Nemean Lion, the Lernean Hydra, and Cerberus — and episodes from his later life and death. This plate depicts the moment before his death, when Deianira sends through the servant Lichas the garment steeped in the blood of the centaur Nessus.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although they illustrate gigantic mythological deeds, each print in Beham’s Hercules series is only a few inches wide, and the name Little Masters refers to the diminutive scale of the works, not the artists’ height.

Notice how Beham solves everything with lines: the fur of the Nemean lion skin, the tassels on Hercules beard and skirt, and the folds of the tunic carried by Lichas are built with extremely fine cross-hatching typical of Renaissance printmaking. The contrast between the deep black ink and the light tone of the paper creates volume in the fluted columns and the stone pavement. It is a tiny but dense print, meant to be seen up close, where every texture helps tell the story.

This scene is the beginning of the end for Hercules: he receives from Lichas the tunic soaked with the blood of the centaur Nessus, sent by Deianira. In the series of twelve prints from 1542, Beham summarizes the life of the son of Jupiter and Alcmena, from his labors against the Nemean lion, the Lernaean hydra and Cerberus, to this tragedy. In the background, the two small figures struggling and the circular building with a dome remind us that the myth takes place in an idealized ancient city, not in a wild landscape.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Hercules looks super strong, with big muscles and his giant club resting on the ground, and he carries a lion skin hanging from his arm like a cape. Lichas comes carrying a tunic that looks very heavy and holds it open with both hands to give it to him. I like counting the details: the columns, the floor tiles, the round building in the back and even two tiny people fighting behind. At the top right there are words in Latin and some hidden initials HSB.
