What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal black-and-white engraving on yellowed, slightly grainy paper shows a battle crammed edge to edge, with almost no empty space. At the top, a Latin inscription in capitals reads 'HERCVLES MVLTIS BELLIS LACESSIT TROIAM'. Below it, men and horses overlap in a compact mass. In the foreground, a horse lies on its back or side with its head twisted up, legs stiff and mane spread across the ground; beside it, at the lower left, a man lies face up with closed eyes. Two riders face off in the centre, thrusting long lances or spears. The rider at left, seen from behind and largely nude, wears a helmet and rears up in his saddle; the one at right, also helmeted and carrying a shield, leans into his attack as his horse lifts its front legs. Behind them, other muscular figures clutch shields, clubs and arrows, while horses snort, bite and rear. One horse in the centre stares straight out with its mouth open, showing its teeth. Dense cross-hatching models muscles, hides and shadows. '1545' appears at lower left and the monogram 'HSB' at lower right.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the fallen horse in the foreground and notice how its body organizes the whole battle. Then move to the horses' faces: one screams toward the viewer while the others strain against reins and lances. Finally, look for Hercules among so many similar bodies and weapons; the difficulty of finding him changes the idea of a single, clear hero.
ContextContexto
This 1545 engraving by Hans Sebald Beham (1500–1550), a German printmaker, belongs to a series on Hercules in which, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the artist compressed twelve stories about the hero into very small prints. Only three show his famous labours — the Nemean Lion, the Hydra and Cerberus; the others recount episodes from his life and death. Beham was one of the 'Little Masters', printmakers celebrated for their virtuosity at miniature scale. The museum source connects this scene with Hercules' attack on Troy, but does not specify which printed version or precise dimensions this impression has.

Curious detailDato curioso
Despite the epic scale of the subject, the 'Little Masters' were valued precisely for how much narrative they could engrave into a print small enough to be held in the hand.

What captivates me is the yellowish, slightly grained paper and how the black and white has endured over time. This crowded battle, with almost no empty space between bodies, is built only with dense, crosshatched lines. With those strokes Beham models tense muscles, manes, and deep shadows. I look at the fallen horse in the foreground, its head twisted and legs stiff, and the shading of its coat. Below I can make out 1545 and the monogram HSB. It is virtuosity in miniature that demands we preserve every line.

I spend nights looking for order in the sky, and here I see the opposite: a compact mass where everything collides. The upper band reading HERCVLES MVLTIS BELLIS LACESSIT TROIAM is like a constellation naming the chaos below. Two horsemen charge each other with long lances in the center, one seen from behind and almost nude, while horses rear and bite. There are no stars, only bodies and snorting horses. Beham compressed a huge story into a very small print, like fitting a galaxy into the palm of your hand.

There are so many horses and men fighting all squished together! It scares me a little but I can't stop looking. At the bottom left there is a horse lying on its side with stiff legs and next to it a man with his eyes closed. In the middle two helmeted riders hit each other with super long sticks. A horse in the center looks at me mean with its mouth open and teeth showing. At the top there are weird letters I don't understand. Everything is made with little black lines and looks very crowded.
