What you would seeLo que verías
A small horizontal engraving in black ink on aged, cream-colored paper, entirely built from fine hatching and cross-hatching. Across the top runs an inscribed band like an unfurled ribbon, with Latin capitals and the date and monogram “15 HSB 45” at upper right. On the left, a bearded, muscular nude Hercules strides forward, both arms raised high as he swings a heavy club. Around his shoulder and arm hangs the Nemean lion's skin, its paws and tail fluttering behind him. In the center crouches the Hydra, a reptilian dragon with scaled legs, clawed feet, a long tail, and a burst of sinuous necks ending in snake-like heads with open jaws and forked tongues; two severed necks already lie limp on the ground. On the right, seen mostly from behind, a second nude man, Iolaus, grips a long pole or torch with both hands and leans toward the monster. Dense trees and foliage fill the background, their trunks dividing the scene; rocks appear at far left and small stones, plants, and a tiny crab near Hercules' feet cover the foreground. The contrast between the pale bodies and the dark, textured forest makes the struggle feel crowded and immediate.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the two raised and lowered weapons at the edges, then move to the Hydra's tangled necks at the center. Notice how the trees behind it make the monster seem to emerge from the forest itself. Finally, look down: the severed heads and the tiny crab tell you the fight has already begun.
ContextContexto
This 1545 engraving by German artist Hans Sebald Beham (1500–1550) shows Hercules, assisted by Iolaus, killing the Lernaean Hydra, one of the twelve labors he undertook as penance. According to the source, Beham belonged to the group now called the “Little Masters,” German printmakers known for remarkably small, finely engraved prints prized by collectors of miniatures and curiosities. This image belongs to a series of twelve scenes from Hercules' life. Hercules, son of Jupiter and the mortal Alcmena, was a favorite classical hero in Renaissance art because of his physical and moral trials.

Curious detailDato curioso
At Hercules' feet there is a small crab: in the myth, Hera sent it to bite him during the fight, and it was later placed among the stars as the constellation Cancer.

I linger on the tiny scale and it amazes me. This 1545 engraving is pure line on aged cream paper, no color, just black ink. Look at the ultra-fine hatching that models muscles, scales and foliage, and how the contrast between pale bodies and dark forest makes the scene pop. Along the top runs the band with Latin inscription and the monogram 15 HSB 45. My concern is preserving that thin paper: light and humidity make it fragile, but every crosshatched line shows how the Little Masters flaunted precision in miniature.

I look for constellations and here I see two in action. Hercules, the bearded muscular hero with club and lion skin, shines like his northern constellation, kneeling and fighting. Before him the Hydra writhes with its many necks and serpent heads, like the long Water Snake constellation stretching across the spring sky. Even the tiny crab at his feet recalls Cancer. In 1545 Beham was not drawing stars, but he told the same myth we later trace overhead every night.

It is a super dramatic and slightly gross fight! Hercules is naked, super strong, lifting his giant club high above his head to hit the monster. The Hydra looks like a dinosaur with lots of snake heads sticking out their tongues and two cut-off heads already lying on the ground, yuck! Behind, Iolaus helps with a long stick like a torch. I love hunting for hidden details: the lion skin hanging down, the little stones, the tiny plants and the super small crab that no one notices at first.
