What you would seeLo que verías

This black-and-white lithograph depicts a parliamentary hemicycle seen from a slightly elevated, diagonal viewpoint, with four curved rows of benches packed with middle-aged and elderly men. All wear dark 19th-century frock coats, waistcoats and white cravats. Their faces are heavily caricatured with exaggerated features: double chins, bulbous noses, furrowed brows and balding pates. The composition centers on their bellies, which protrude over the pale wooden balustrade in the foreground. In the front row, a standing man in profile, wearing a coat and wig, appears to address the chamber while holding papers; around him, others yawn, doze, whisper or stare with contempt. The light is diffuse and frontal, casting soft shadows across the folds of clothing and fleshy faces. Faint lettering on the railing behind the front row reads BANS... MINISTRES. The palette is monochrome — black, grey and the beige of the paper — with the grainy texture typical of lithography. At the bottom, the title LE VENTRE LÉGISLATIF and the signature H. Daumier are visible. The scale feels crowded and almost suffocating, where small details — a crossed hand, a top hat resting on the desk, an open book — reinforce an atmosphere of pompous boredom and drowsy power.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the row of protruding bellies in the foreground and move upward row by row, noticing how each face shows a different attitude: sleep, mockery or annoyance. Focus on the standing man in the central aisle, whose posture breaks the seated mass and reveals the theatricality of parliament. Finally, look for the fragmented lettering on the railing that anchors the scene in a real legislative space.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I first look at the light beige paper and the granular texture of the lithograph, with blacks, grays and soft shadows modeling the clothing. This 1834 print by Honoré Daumier has a title at the bottom and a signature we must preserve without erasing its patina. The bellies protruding over the light wooden balustrade are the visual center and also the most handled area for close looking. Caring for those folds and jowls means keeping the satire intact.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this hemicycle like a constellation viewed from above and at an angle, with four curved orbits packed with bodies. Each caricatured face is a planet with a double chin, shiny bald head and bulbous nose, spinning in its bench. The standing man with papers and a wig looks like a comet crossing the field. The diffuse light from the front models volumes like sunlight on craters. Behind, the partial inscription BANS... MINISTRES feels like a label for this parliamentary cosmos.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a photo of a bunch of big-bellied gentlemen squeezed into curved benches! There are four rows and they all wear black suits with little white ties. Their faces are funny with huge cheeks, big noses and bored looks, some yawning and some even sleeping. Their bellies stick out over the light wooden railing. One is standing with papers as if talking alone. Everything is in black, white and beige like an old newspaper.

Look at the image from above at an angle, follow the curved wooden rails where the bellies stick out.

  2. #2

On the back railing, what large letters can still be read that indicate who occupies those benches?

    HintPista

Look at the back, behind the last row, there is an inscription in capital letters on the wood.

  3. #3

Besides the bellies, what tall black object rests on the railing in the foreground?

Search in the lower part, among crossed hands and papers, for an elegant 19th century head accessory.
