What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the print, a massive, leafy tree spans almost the entire upper width, its thick branches bearing more than twenty hanged bodies lined up like fruit. Each figure wears tattered soldiers’ clothing and hangs with head tilted and feet suspended. The etching line is fine and dense, with crosshatching that textures bark, foliage and garments. In the foreground, on uneven ground, a crowded scene unfolds: to the left, ranks of soldiers with pikes and banners look on; at the center, by the trunk, a friar kneels to hear the confession of a condemned man, while another man climbs a ladder propped against the tree and an executioner tightens a rope. Further right, a drum serves as a lectern for an officer reading the sentence, and other condemned prisoners wait under guard. In the background a military camp with tents and palisades stretches away. At the bottom, an empty sky leaves space for three verses in old French. The palette is monochrome, in black ink on ivory paper, with diffuse light that highlights the ordered horror of the whole composition.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the horizontal line of hanging bodies to feel the weight of repetition. Then lower your gaze to the foot of the tree and pause on the friar hearing confession and the condemned man on the ladder; the contrast between the calm ritual and the mass violence completely changes the reading.

ContextContexto
This print titled The Hanging belongs to the series Les Grandes Misères de la Guerre, created by French printmaker Jacques Callot in 1633, according to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art. The work was executed as an etching, a printmaking technique in which Callot excelled. The series, comprising 18 images, critically documents atrocities committed by soldiers during the Thirty Years’ War, a conflict that devastated Europe between 1618 and 1648. The verses at the bottom, added by Abraham Bosse, moralize the scene by presenting the punishment as divine justice against pillage. No specific commission details are recorded in the source data, but the series is recognized as one of the earliest anti-war statements in Western art history.

Callot’s series directly influenced Francisco de Goya’s The Disasters of War, made almost two centuries later, and Goya’s title pays homage to this work.

Come closer and you will see everything is made with black lines on ivory paper. This is an etching from 1633, and I love how Callot uses incredibly fine cross-hatching to shade the bark of the tree, the soldiers' rags and the leaves. The huge tree holds more than twenty bodies hanging like dark fruit. Below, the ink thickens in the crowd, the ladder and the drum. Over time the paper has turned a warm ivory tone, but the black ink remains intense and cruelly sharp.

I look at this print and think of terrible constellations. The tree is like an inverted night sky and each hanged man is a star dangling from its branches. There are more than twenty points lined up against the leafy crown. Below, the crowd with pikes and banners looks like a milky way of onlookers who dare not look up. Callot drew this during the Thirty Years' War and used the geometric order of Baroque printmaking to show a horror that, like the universe, feels infinite and organized.

This tree gives me the creeps because instead of apples it has people hanging with their heads tilted. There are so many, more than twenty, all in torn soldier clothes. Down below there is a man with a ladder leaning on the trunk and another who looks like a priest praying with a kneeling soldier. There are also drums, flags and little houses that are really camp tents. Everything is in black and cream, like an old drawing made only with a pen. I do not like it, but I cannot stop counting the hanging figures.
