What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white woodcut on cream paper, made of dense black lines and the slightly irregular stroke typical of wood carving. In the foreground, along the bottom edge, a herd fills the lower strip: two woolly, curved-horn animals graze head-down at center, a round-backed sheep grazes at left, and several cattle — one large, in profile, with visible horns and ear — crowd together at right, partly overlapping. At center, barefoot and seen from behind, a half-naked man with cloth knotted at his waist reaches his right arm toward a baby held by a woman. At left stand two women with long wavy hair, bare breasts and light skirts; one looks down while embracing a girl in profile who raises a hand. Below, a small child leans on a sheep and looks outward. At right, beneath tall trees with twisted trunks and sparse canopy in the upper corner, another woman with disordered hair balances a wide basket on her head and holds a stick. Long spears lean against the tree at the far right. The left background is empty paper, with no landscape, concentrating the scene in tightly packed figures, grass drawn with short strokes, and shading made by hatching.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the exchange at the center: the man's hand reaching toward the baby. Then move to the edges, where the empty left side contrasts with the dense tangle of trees, spears and animals on the right. Notice how many figures look outward or downward rather than at one another; that detail makes the scene feel observed from outside, not lived from within.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a woodcut by German artist Hans Burgkmair (1473–1531), dated only within the broad range 1488–1531 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its historical title, *Hottentots with Herd*, uses a word now considered derogatory for Khoikhoi peoples of southern Africa. In the early sixteenth century, European prints about distant peoples were often based on travel accounts rather than direct observation, mixing reported details with invention. From these records alone, the exact date and the book or series to which it probably belonged are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

A striking visual observation: although the subject is meant to be southern African, the livestock, trees, bodies and engraved hatching look like those of a northern European print workshop, revealing more about the maker's world than about the people portrayed.

The conservatorLa restauradora

When I look at this print by Hans Burgkmair I think about woodcut technique. The contrast between the cream paper and the dense, irregular black lines shows the work of the woodblock and ink. I notice the fragility of the support and the hatching that creates shadows on the grass and the bodies. It is dated between 1488 and 1531 and kept in Cleveland. We have no exact date or series, so I read only what is material and avoid adding beyond what the record allows.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I am intrigued by the empty background, that paper with no landscape on the left. As a sky watcher I know emptiness guides the eye. Here everything is crowded: people in the center, the herd below and twisted trees only at the upper right corner. Spears leaning against the trunk, a woman with a basket on her head and children among sheep: they look like notes from a traveler who did not see firsthand but was told. The image mixes hearsay and sixteenth-century European imagination.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are so many little animals together! I see two woolly ones with curved horns in the middle, a sheep on the left and several cattle huddled on the right. There is a baby held by a woman and a little girl raising her hand. A small boy leans on a sheep and looks at me. A lady carries a big basket on her head and a stick in her hand. Behind there are skinny twisted trees and grass drawn with little strokes. Everything is close together like a family out for a walk.
