What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal black-and-white wood engraving, enclosed by a thin dark border on off-white paper. Inside a dim peasant interior, two large figures face each other in the foreground. On the left, a man seen from behind and in three-quarter view sits hunched on a low wooden stool. He wears a dark hat, a heavy jacket and trousers, and thick shoes. With both hands he manipulates long, thin strands hanging toward the floor, probably weaving or repairing a basket. Between his feet stands a short cylindrical container holding tools. On the right, a woman sits upright on a straight-backed chair, her head bowed beneath a light cap. She wears a pale blouse and a long, voluminous skirt that catches the light, and she sews a piece of cloth resting across her lap. At the center rises a tall post holding a small oil lamp. Its flame creates a bright radiating halo, modeled with dense, crossed lines. Behind the post is a cradle with a small, reclining figure. To the far left, in near darkness, a cat sits by a hearth; to the right, shelves hold indistinct vessels. The floor, walls and clothing are rendered through rough cross-hatching, contrasting deep shadows with the warm-looking glow at the center.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the lamp at the center and let its halo guide you to the two faces turned away from each other, each absorbed in handwork. Then look behind the post, where the shape of a cradle appears, and to the far left, where a small cat sits in shadow. These quieter details turn a scene of labor into one of domestic life continuing after dark.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is *Four Hours of the Day: Night*, made in 1860 by the French artist Adrien Lavieille (1818–1862) and preserved at the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is a wood engraving, a printmaking technique in which the image is cut into a block and built from networks of fine lines. Its title suggests it belonged to a sequence devoted to different times of day, although the source does not identify the other images or their present location. The identities and the exact place of the peasants shown are not known; probably they are not portraits, but a representative image of rural work prolonged into the night.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: the brightest point is not a face, but the small flame of the lamp; from it, the engraver organizes almost the entire scene, including the visibility of the sleeping child in the background.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on how this 1860 wood engraving is made: everything is line work on bone-colored paper, held by a thin dark border. The rough, crosshatched textures build deep shadows on walls, floor and clothing, saving the white of the paper for the radiant halo of the small oil lamp at the center. I am struck by the contrast between the dense hatching of the hunched man and the luminous skirt of the sewing woman, as if the light itself were sculpting the scene.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
For me this night is not about stars but about a single flame. The oil lamp at the center is like a small domestic sun holding two human planets: the man braiding threads on his low bench and the woman sewing with her head bowed. I love that even in black and white you feel darkness outside and a warm circle inside. Behind the post there is even a cradle, reminding us that while we work, the night keeps watching over rest.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like it is very late at night and they only have a tiny lamp to see. The man is hunched over working with long threads and the lady is sewing a big cloth on her lap. The light makes her skirt shine so bright. In the back there is a little cradle with a sleeping baby and on the other side, almost hidden in the dark, there is a kitty by the fireplace. I like counting how many things I can find even though everything is almost dark and in black and white.
