What you would seeLo que verías

Centered against a soft, neutral gray background, a medium-sized ceramic amphora stands in frontal view, its ovoid body dominating the composition. The vessel has a full, rounded belly coated in glossy black glaze that catches light in gentle highlights, tapering to a low, flared foot and rising to a narrow cylindrical neck topped by a broad, disc-like mouth. Two thick, dark vertical handles arch gracefully from shoulder to mid-neck. Decoration is limited to pale, terracotta-colored bands: at the foot, a ring of sharp black rays resembling petals; at the shoulder, a frieze of elongated tongue patterns in cream and muted red; and around the neck, an intricate double chain of interlinked black palmettes and lotus blossoms, finely drawn and symmetrically arranged, bordered by thin added-red lines. The upper lip of the mouth remains glazed in black. Even, diffuse lighting emphasizes the contrast between the lustrous black surface and the matte ornamental zones, revealing tiny specks, minor abrasions and subtle variations in tone that convey age, handcraft and the tactile quality of fired clay.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the striking contrast between the large black body and the light ornamental bands at neck and foot. Then examine the palmette chain closely and see how it frames and emphasizes the vessel’s shape. Finally notice the glaze reflections and surface wear that hint at age and materiality.

ContextContexto

This is a Black-Figure Neck-Amphora of Panathenaic Shape, dated to 525–500 BCE, made in Attic Greece by an unknown maker in ceramic. According to information from the Cleveland Museum of Art, its narrow neck and base descend from transport vessels for oil and wine, while the painted ornament — rays at the base, tongues on the shoulder and a double lotus-and-palmette chain on the neck with added red rings and black gloss — highlights its architecture. Related vases showing Athena and athletic scenes were filled with Athenian olive oil and given as prizes at the Panathenaic Games.

Curious detailDato curioso

Genuine Panathenaic prize amphorae held sacred oil from Athena’s olive trees and were highly prized trophies; this example shares their distinctive shape but features a more restrained, purely ornamental decoration.

I pause to look at how the black glaze wraps around the plump body and how light bounces off the belly, revealing both shine and specks and wear from time. I notice the low circular foot, the two thick handles joining shoulder and neck, and the disk-shaped mouth. I love how decoration follows the architecture of the vessel: rays on the base like pointed petals, cream and reddish tongues on the shoulder and the double chain of palmettes and lotuses on the neck, separated by thin red rings. Everything is designed to highlight the shape without hiding it.

This amphora reminds me of a small planet balanced against a gray background like outer space. Its ovoid and symmetrical silhouette, with narrow neck and circular foot, seems designed to be stable, like a celestial body spinning without falling. The two vertical handles are like fixed orbits connecting shoulder and neck. I am intrigued by the neck band with intertwined black palmettes and lotuses, a perfectly ordered and symmetrical vegetal constellation, and the rays on the base radiating like stars around the equator of the vessel. It is pure geometry made into ceramics.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant shiny belly with two ears on the sides to hold it. It is black and shines as if painted with dark nail polish, but it has light little drawings that make it look fancy. At the bottom it has little points like sunbeams, up top little tongues in cream and red, and on the little neck a little chain of black flowers hugging each other. I imagine it is very old because you can see speckles and scratches, as if it had traveled a lot and stored oil or juice many many years ago.
