What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a vertical ivory plaque carved in relief, photographed frontally against a black background and resting on a dark grey surface. Its outline rises to a pointed triangular gable at the top, edged with small rosettes in relief and pierced near the apex by a trefoil opening. Below this, a moulded pointed arch, supported by slender side columns with capitals, frames the scene like a miniature Gothic window. At the centre, frontal and on axis, the Virgin wears a veil and a mantle whose long, wavy folds fall almost to her feet. She holds the Child with one arm; he is small in scale, shown in profile, with a faintly marked halo and one hand resting on his mother's breast, while her free hand is gathered at her torso. Above her head, an angel descends upside down, body leaning out from beneath the arch, holding a crown in both hands. On either side, a standing angel in profile, dressed in tunic and mantle, turns toward the centre and holds a slender candlestick with a thin, dark, upright tip. The ivory is cream and beige, finely veined, with soft shadows in the folds and greenish and golden traces of colour. Gentle light reveals its intimate scale, serene faces, carved curls, and delicate hands.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the center, with the Virgin and Child, then follow the Child's gaze and hand outward. Notice the angel descending from above to crown her, and only afterward the two candle-bearing angels who frame the scene. The contrast between the pale ivory and the thin, dark candle tips helps guide the eye.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is an ivory plaque with traces of paint and gilding, made in Paris, France, around 1320–1330, during the Gothic period, by an unknown maker. It was once the center of an ivory triptych, a hinged three-panel devotional object; the side panels are not shown here. The scene shows the enthroned Virgin with the Christ Child, flanked by two standing angels holding candlesticks, while a third angel descends to crown her as Queen of Heaven. Such small, portable objects were likely intended for close, private devotion. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso

The plaque was not originally plain white: its traces of paint and gilding, still visible as faint greenish and golden tones in the drapery, show that medieval ivory could once look far more colourful.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on what time has left on the creamy beige ivory of this Gothic plaque from Paris around 1320-1330. I see greenish and golden traces of paint, faint veins and soft shadows in the long folds of the Virgin's mantle. As a restorer I am amazed by the fine relief of the curls, the slender hands and the rosettes on the pointed triangular gable. It was the center of a devotional triptych and its intimate scale asks for delicate light and close care to keep reading its story without erasing it.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this plaque as a miniature Gothic window cut against a black background that reminds me of the night sky. The pointed arch with small columns frames the Virgin on axis with the Child in her arms, like a central constellation. I love the angel descending headfirst from the arch to crown her, like a comet in slow fall, and the two side angels with candlesticks that look like they hold steady lights. All the creamy ivory floats over the gray darkness, small and luminous like a find through a telescope.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This little ivory plaque looks like a pointy little house for the Virgin and her Child. She wears a veil and a dress with lots of little lines that are its folds, and she hugs him close. On top there is a little angel flying head down to put a crown on her, like doing a somersault! On the sides there are two standing angels, each with a long little candle with a dark tip. Everything is light creamy color, with calm little faces, and I like that the photo shows it on a black background to see it better.
