Monkeys Riding a Camel and a Bull, 1594Monos montando un camello y un toro, 1594

engraving
What you would seeLo que verías
A small horizontal black-and-white engraving with a thin border and visible paper texture around the plate. The entire field is filled with a fantastical animal procession set against a dark, densely stippled background. On the left, a small shaggy monkey sits atop a two-humped camel, holding a rein in one hand and raising a whip or crop in the other, gazing forward with a focused expression. The camel strides with its head turned slightly and mouth half open. Partially cropped below them, a wild boar with an open snout emerges into view. In the center, a stag with large branching antlers walks in profile to the left, and at its feet a little dog lies on the ground, head lifted and mouth open as if barking or howling, next to tufts of grass and a tiny five-petaled flower. On the right, a second, stockier monkey with curly fur rides a sturdy bull or ox, a lance with a fluttering pennant strapped to its back, reaching out one hand toward the stag's antlers. The bull moves with a steady gait, head lowered. Light is created entirely through fine cross-hatching and dots that shape volume, fur, and shadow. The date 1594 is inscribed at the bottom center, and the monogram NB appears at the upper right corner.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the two monkey riders at the left and right edges and follow the diagonal formed by the camel and bull toward the central stag. Then look down at the small details on the ground, the reclining dog and the tiny flower, which anchor the scene and give scale to the procession.
ContextContexto
The work is recorded as an engraving dated 1594 attributed to Nicolaes de Bruyn (1571–1656), an artist from the Low Countries, with a reference to A. van Londerseel, and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It belongs to the 16th-century Netherlandish print tradition, a period rich in satirical prints and animal fantasies. Images of monkeys dressed or acting as humans, often called singerie, were common to parody human customs, military parades, or hunts. The source provides no detailed description of its exact meaning, so its precise allegorical intent is not known, though it is probably a burlesque or moralizing scene.

Singerie, monkeys imitating human actions, was a popular genre in Flemish and French art from the 16th century onward, used to create social satire without directly depicting people.

If you look closely you will see this is not a photo but a black and white engraving, made with super fine lines and tiny dots that create fur, shadows and the dense black background. The paper is a pale bone color, with gray tones that give volume to the animals. I notice the thin border and the date 1594 at the bottom center, and the monogram NB at the top right. It is delicate, all the detail is built with cross-hatching.

What draws me is how the artist plays with night. That dotted black background looks like a starless sky, and against it an impossible procession marches in the light of the engraving. The stag with branched antlers in the center feels like a constellation, and the two monkey riders, one on a camel and one on a bull with its little banner, move like planets in orbit. It is an orderly fantasy, like a celestial parade but with earthly animals.

It looks like a funny animal parade! Two little monkeys are riding like cowboys, one on a two-humped camel with a whip and another on a big strong bull with a spear that has a little flag. In the middle there is a deer with tree-like antlers and below there is a small dog lying down that seems to be barking and a hidden wild boar. Everything is packed together and it makes me laugh to see monkeys doing human things.
