What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical black-and-white engraving rendered with extremely fine lines and dense cross-hatching that builds volume and deep space. In the immediate foreground, three disciples lie asleep on rocky ground and heavy, wrinkled cloaks: one at lower left face-down with cheek on his arm and a short sword at his waist, bearded and balding; one in the center with a hood, leaning against a boulder, eyes closed; and one at lower right curled on his side, long hair falling, hands tucked under his cheek; their drapery falls in weighty folds and details such as bare feet, beards and fabric creases are minutely hatched. Just behind them, kneeling on a raised rock with back partly turned and hands clasped in prayer, is Jesus in a long robe, gazing upward. At the upper left, among clouds and the gnarled trunk and branches of a tree, an angel bathed in a bright halo leans forward holding a chalice from which a beam of light descends onto the rock. The middle and far background open into a wooded landscape with dense foliage, a wooden fence, a winding path and a small approaching group of soldiers with spears near a distant tower under a sky streaked with engraved lines to suggest dusk.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the triangle of the three sleepers at the bottom and notice how their heavy stillness contrasts with the taut prayer above. Follow the beam of light from the angel’s chalice down to Jesus, then search the distant path on the right for the tiny approaching soldiers that foreshadow the next moment.

ContextContexto

This print belongs to The Passion series by Hendrick Goltzius (1558–1617), a leading Dutch engraver and painter of late Mannerism. Dated 1597 and monogrammed HG, it depicts the Gospel episode of the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prays before his arrest while his disciples sleep. The work is an engraving, the medium for which Goltzius was renowned for his virtuoso, swelling line and dramatic light. The impression is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, Department of Prints, as a Gift of Leonard C. Hanna Jr. The imagery follows Counter-Reformation iconography, emphasizing emotional intensity and devotional drama, but specific patronage or early impression states are not documented in the provided data.

Curious detailDato curioso

Goltzius pioneered the swelling line technique, making a single engraved stroke swell and taper to model form without extra shading, a skill evident in the voluminous drapery and rocky textures of this print.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the contrast between the disciples’ deep sleep and Jesus’s isolated vigil shape the emotional tone?¿Cómo cambia el significado de la escena el contraste entre el sueño pesado de los discípulos y la soledad luminosa de Jesús?
  2. What role does the angel’s light play as both a compositional link and a spiritual symbol?¿Qué papel juega la luz del ángel como puente visual y espiritual entre cielo y tierra?
  3. Why might the artist make the arriving soldiers so small and distant, and how does that affect anticipation?¿Por qué el artista situó a los soldados tan pequeños y lejanos, y qué efecto crea esa distancia?

If you look closely you will see Goltzius tool work from 1597: super fine lines and cross hatching that build volume. Look at the wrinkled cloaks of the three sleeping disciples, how each heavy fold falls over the rocks and how beards, bare feet and even the small dagger at the waist are carefully detailed. I focus on the contrast between the deep black of #0f0f0f and the luminous white of #f2efe6 that creates the chiaroscuro. The beam of light on the rock and the dense foliage in the background show his mastery of copper engraving.

What catches me is the light in this Gethsemane night. In the upper left corner, among clouds and twisted branches, an angel with a glowing halo holds a chalice and casts a straight beam of light onto the rock where Jesus kneels in prayer. It is the only heavenly source against the small torches carried by soldiers in the background along the path near the tower. And notice the sky hatched by the engraver tool: those parallel lines are the printmaker trying to capture darkness and make the divine glow stand out even more.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I find the three disciples sweet and funny because they are super asleep while Jesus prays. One is face down on the left with his little sword, one in the middle with a hood leaning on a rock with his head tilted and one on the right curled up with hands under his cheek and long hair. They all fell asleep! Above there is a little angel with bright light holding a little cup. Behind, some little soldiers with spears come along a path and there is a crooked knotty tree that looks like from a storybook.
