What you would seeLo que verías

A low, wide basket rests at the center of a plain gray background, photographed from the side at about its own height. Its shape is rounded and compressed, like a soft donut or a squat ring: the walls swell outward, curve gently inward at the top, and open into a broad, dark oval mouth. The base sits flat, casting a soft, dark shadow to the right. The surface is made of countless tiny, tight, horizontal stitches in warm tan and golden straw tones. Over this ground runs a pattern of dark brown, almost black, angular forms — zigzags, stepped blocks and broken bands that wrap around the body and disappear over the curve. Scattered across the upper shoulder are small glossy beads, mostly bright red, some with a white center or highlight, like berries resting on the weave. The light comes from the upper left, picking out the texture of each coil and making the beads shine. Inside, the bowl falls into brown shadow, with only a faint hint of the pattern continuing within. There are no people, text or other objects; the scale is not given by the photograph, but every stitch remains crisp and legible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall silhouette, almost like a smooth ring, and then move closer to the thousands of tiny stitches. Notice next how the red beads interrupt the earthy geometry: they are not part of the woven pattern, but a second rhythm placed over it. That contrast changes the piece from a container into an object made to be looked at.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this trinket bowl was made around 1895 by an unknown maker from the Pomo culture of California, dated to the late 19th or early 20th century. It is woven from bulrush and sedge using a single-rod coiling technique, with added beads. Pomo basketry is widely recognized for its technical finesse and geometric decoration. The museum does not state who used this particular bowl or exactly what it held; its English title suggests it was intended for small objects. It entered the collection as a gift from Mrs. Lyman H. Treadway.

Curious detailDato curioso

The red beads sit on the upper shoulder rather than around the rim, so from above they would form a scattered ring around the opening, while from the side they look like small points of color floating over the weave.

I focus on the tiny, tight, horizontal stitches that make up this Pomo bowl woven around 1895 with tule and sedge using single-rod coiling. I see the warm straw and toasted golden background, with the dark brown angular pattern wrapping all the way around. I am fascinated by the intense red beads with white highlights integrated into the weave on the shoulder, and how light from the upper left reveals each coil. It is an example of the technical fineness for which Pomo basketry is so widely recognized.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Seen from the side, this bowl reminds me of a small ringed planet or a solid orbit: rounded, flattened, with a dark oval mouth in the center like a shadowed crater. The dark brown zigzag and stepped-block pattern looks like a geometric constellation spinning around its body, and the shiny red beads are like little stars resting on its equator. The side light creates a soft shadow to the right, as if it were floating on a smooth gray background that feels like empty space.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a big chubby donut but with no hole, like a tiny pool float for dolls. I like its golden cookie color and its dark brown little drawings that zigzag around like lightning bolts. On top it has lots of shiny red little balls that look like candies or berries and some have a little white dot that sparkles. Inside it is kind of dark and you cannot see much. If it were mine, I would keep my hair ties, my favorite pebbles and a tooth I lost in there.

  1. #1

If you look at the upper shoulder of the bowl, what color are most of the shiny little beads that look like berries?

    HintPista

They are little dots that shine and sometimes have a white center, resting on the golden weave.

  2. #2

Seen from the side, the bowl is not tall or square, what bread or ring shape does the record compare it to?

    HintPista

Think of something round, chubby and with an oval mouth in the center, like something to float on.

  3. #3

On what solid background color is the bowl photographed that casts its shadow to the right?

    HintPista

It is not white or black, it is the color of a calm cloud.
