What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a creamy, slightly textured paper with soft uneven edges, a woman sits facing forward, upright, her hands resting on her lap holding a pale piece of sewing. The image is a lithograph in black lithographic crayon, executed with loose, nervous, sketch-like strokes, with shading built from hatched lines and smudged washes. The figure fills most of the vertical space. She wears a dark long-sleeved blouse or dress buttoned at the collar, its volume suggested by dense, layered strokes. Her face is small and summarily drawn: dark deep-set eyes that look straight at the viewer, nose and mouth barely indicated, hair short and pulled back. Across her knees falls a wrinkled white cloth that creates the brightest area of the print and contrasts sharply with the darker tones of her clothing. Behind her to the left one can make out the suggestion of an armchair or cushion rendered with quick diagonal marks. Around the figure the background dissolves into radial, undefined scribbles, a shadowy halo that leaves much of the paper empty. At the bottom center, very small, is the artist's distinctive butterfly monogram. The scale feels intimate, like a life sketch captured quietly and quickly.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the sitter's direct gaze and then move down to her hands holding the white sewing; the contrast between the dark dress and the bright cloth is the visual anchor. Notice how the strokes thicken around the body and fade toward the edges, making the figure emerge from the empty paper. Look for the tiny butterfly monogram at the bottom center, Whistler's playful signature.
ContextContexto
This print is Needlework, a lithograph made in 1896 by James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903), an American artist active in the United States, France and England and a central figure of Aestheticism. According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, where this impression is held as part of the Prints collection and was a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph King, it is classified under American culture and the category of Print. Whistler devoted himself intensely to lithography in the 1890s, often choosing quiet domestic subjects. The sitter's identity is not given in the source, probably a model or someone from his close circle.

Curious detailDato curioso
Whistler's famous butterfly monogram, seen small at the bottom of this sheet, was designed in the late 1860s from his initials and became his lifelong signature on prints and paintings.

I focus on the granulated cream paper and how the black lithographic crayon clings to it. I see the loose, nervous stroke, the cross-hatching that builds the dark blouse and the smoky halo around the figure. What moves me most is the contrast: the light, wrinkled cloth on her lap is the brightest area, almost untouched, letting the paper breathe. Below, the tiny butterfly monogram confirms the artist's intimate and measured gesture.

I see this lithograph like an inverted night sky. The dark background made of radial strokes is like a nebula that dissolves and leaves emptiness around it. At the center, the white cloth on her lap glows like a bright zone, like a small galaxy lit up among shadows. The face with dark eyes looking straight ahead feels like a fixed observation point. And below, the butterfly monogram is like a signature constellation, tiny but recognizable in the vastness of the cream paper.

The lady is sitting very straight and she looks at me with big dark eyes. She wears a black blouse buttoned up to the neck and in her hands she holds a little white cloth all wrinkled, it is the brightest part of the whole drawing. It looks like she is sewing very calmly. Behind her there are little lines that look like an armchair. I like that the drawing is not fully painted, there is a lot of light empty paper around and at the bottom there is a tiny little butterfly that is the artist's signature.
