What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of the print, against a pale, almost empty background, a thin man stands in a three-quarter pose, looking back over his shoulder at the viewer. He has dark, tousled, shoulder-length hair, a loose, stained painter's smock falling to mid-calf, tight trousers and worn shoes. In his left hand he holds a palette with paint spots and brushes; his right hand rests on a long, thin mahlstick that touches the wooden plank floor. His posture is languid and theatrical, torso twisted and legs crossed, conveying fatigue or ironic self-display. Behind him the edge of a large blank canvas leans against the wall, and further back on the right, a sketchily indicated easel, draped cloths and another ornate painting are barely suggested. The lithograph is executed with nervous, cross-hatched strokes and soft shading that model the face, the folds of the smock and the texture of the floor, with gentle light sculpting his weary features. At the top appears the series title PHYSIONOMIES PARISIENNES, and at the bottom the number 24, the title COMMERCE DES MUSES and the caption Rien n'est beau que le laid.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the painter's affected pose and direct gaze, then follow the vertical mahlstick that anchors the composition. Notice the contrast between the large blank canvas behind him and the sketchy clutter of the studio corner; that tension carries the irony of the title.

ContextContexto

The print belongs to the series Physionomies parisiennes by Paul Gavarni (1804–1866), a prolific French illustrator and lithographer known for his satirical chronicles of Parisian urban life. Dated around 1857, it is held in the Prints collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art and was made as a lithograph on paper, a medium widely used for illustrated press and albums of social types. The title Commerce des Muses ironically refers to the art market and the bohemian artist figure, while the subtitle Rien n'est beau que le laid echoes a Romantic aesthetic motto. No specific sitter is documented; the figure is probably a caricatured social type rather than an individual portrait.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how this lithograph is made. The almost empty pale background, like aged ivory paper, makes the painter and his stained smock stand out. Notice the nervous lines and cross-hatching that give volume to the robe and the lined face. Soft light shapes the wrinkles and reveals the worn shoes and the spots on the palette. I am interested in how Gavarni, around 1857, uses lithography for a quick and expressive satirical chronicle, perfect for illustrated press and albums of social types.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this painter as someone gazing at an empty universe. Behind him a large blank canvas leans against the wall, like a starless sky waiting to be filled. He holds his palette with smudges and brushes and leans on a long mahlstick touching the wooden plank floor. His languid, theatrical pose, turned three-quarters and looking over his shoulder, seems to ask with irony what is worth painting. It is the commerce of the muses facing the void.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This man looks tired and a bit funny. He has messy hair down to his neck and a long stained smock as if he has painted a lot and did not change clothes. He has his legs crossed and leans on a very long stick that reaches the floor. In his other hand he holds his palette with paints. Behind him there is a huge picture that is all white, with nothing painted yet, and further back you can see draped fabrics and an easel. I feel he is posing for a photo as if saying look at me.
