What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the print, an elderly working man stands in the foreground, seen in three-quarter view and stooped forward with his head bowed. He wears loose, worn work clothes: a soft wide-brimmed hat shading his forehead, a long-sleeved shirt with sleeves pushed up, baggy trousers rolled to the calf, and light slip-on shoes. His right hand grips a long cane resting on the ground; his left hand is raised to his neck in a gesture of fatigue or pain. His bearded, lined face looks downward. Behind him, in the middle ground, a row of large bulging sacks tied at the top stretches across the image, rendered with looser, softer shading that suggests a dock or warehouse. To the right a vertical wall casts a dense shadow. The work is a black-and-white lithograph with nuanced grays, rough textures in the clothing, and quick sketchy strokes for the dusty ground. At the top the words PHYSIONOMIES PARISIENNES appear, and at the bottom the title UN FORT with an ironic caption. The human scale of the figure contrasts with the shapeless mass of sacks.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the stooped posture and the cane that seems to hold his entire weight. Then notice the contrast between the sharply defined figure in front and the blurred, piled sacks behind. Finally look at the hand clutching the neck, a small gesture that shifts the scene from labor to exhaustion.
ContextContexto
This is a lithograph titled Un Fort, made around 1858 by Paul Gavarni (1804-1866), a French artist of the 19th century known for his graphic chronicles of Parisian social types. It belongs to the series Physionomies Parisiennes and is held in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, acquired through the Charles W. Harkness Endowment Fund. The word fort referred in Paris to the porters and carriers of Les Halles and the river docks. The caption below, dont le trois six est le faible, ironically suggests that despite his title as a strong man, his weakness is for cheap brandy. No specific information about the sitter is given; he is probably a social type observed from life rather than an individual portrait.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I first notice this is a black and white lithograph, with grays ranging from near black to light beige. I am drawn to the rough texture Gavarni achieves in the loose, worn work shirt and pants, and the soft shading of the bulky sacks in the background. The long cane resting on the ground and the hand brought to the neck speak of wear. I wonder how the paper has preserved those quick strokes of the earthy ground and the contrast between the stooped figure and the mass of cargo.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
I look at this print and think about weight and gravity. The older man, stooped with his head bowed, holds a cane as if it were a tripod to keep from falling. Behind him, the sacks tied at the top look like dark planets lined up against a wall with dense shadow. The top inscription that reads PHYSIONOMIES PARISIENNES is like the title of a sky map, but here it maps people of Paris. It strikes me that the supposed fort, the strong porter, looks so fragile under his wide brimmed soft hat.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This man looks very tired, as if his neck hurts and that is why he touches it with his hand. He is bent forward and leans on a long stick so he does not fall. He wears a big hat that covers his forehead and very loose clothes with his pants rolled up as if he has worked a lot. Behind him there is a pile of giant sacks tied at the top, bigger than he is. It makes me a bit sad because he is alone in front of a wall and looks like he needs to rest.
