The piece is presented as two images side by side, showing the front (recto) and back (verso) of the same sheet. On the left, the upper two-thirds are a broad expanse of beige and light-brown wash, with visible brushstrokes, dabs, and uneven edges, like a hazy sky or the wall of a trench. In the lower third, a dark mass of deep browns almost blackens the scene: overlapping shapes suggest soldiers huddled together, helmets, sacks, and earth. At far left, one soldier stands out: pale face, small dark features, cap, and a rifle rising diagonally. Another lighter helmeted head bows at center, amid agitated strokes and curved lines that may suggest equipment or wheels. At lower right is a signature and the date 1915. On the right image, the paper is paler and more worn, with marks, small stains, tape at the corners, and round stamps at upper left. There, in fine gray lines, a woman reclines, leaning on one arm, head resting on her hand, hair pulled back and face turned toward the viewer with a faint expression. Her body is suggested by long, flowing curves, with no background or defined setting.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the pale face on the left: it is the focal point amid the dark mass of the trench. Then notice how little of the soldier's body is actually described. On the right, follow the long, unbroken lines of the woman's body and consider how this calm changes your reading of the wartime scene.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a 1915 drawing by French artist Jean Louis Forain (1852–1931), made with pen, brown ink, brush, and brown wash, and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. The date falls during the First World War (1914–1918), which gives the soldier in a trench on the recto a direct historical resonance. The verso holds a very different subject: a reclining woman. It is not known from the available data whether both sides were made at the same moment, nor whether there is an intended narrative link between them. They probably share only the sheet of paper and the artist's hand.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: the same sheet contains two almost opposite worlds — on one side, the compressed darkness of a trench in 1915; on the other, a woman stretched out in a relaxed pose, drawn with just a few light lines.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What story emerges when war and rest occupy the two sides of a single sheet?¿Qué historia surge cuando la guerra y el descanso ocupan las dos caras de una misma hoja?
  2. Why might the artist describe the soldier's face in detail while leaving the woman's body as a few lines?¿Por qué el artista describiría con detalle el rostro del soldado y apenas con unas líneas el cuerpo de la mujer?
  3. Does knowing that the verso exists change how you feel about the recto, and vice versa?¿Saber que existe el reverso cambia lo que sientes frente al anverso, y al revés?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

I pause to look at what the paper itself is saying. On the front I see the beige and light brown wash covering the upper two thirds, with irregular edges and stains that reveal the brushwork. Below, the deep browns turning almost black pile up to suggest earth and crowded shapes. On the other side the support is lighter and worn, with tape at the corners and round stamps at the upper left. There the thin gray lines of the reclining woman barely touch the surface, as if the artist were careful not to wound the paper.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

It makes me think of two different skies. On the left the beige and light brown background is like a murky, heavy sky, with no stars, pressing downward. In the lower third the darkness condenses: everything is deep brown turning to black, where I can barely make out a pale face and a lighter helmet tilting in. On the right, instead, the pale paper is a wide void, with no background or horizon, and the reclining woman appears like a constellation drawn with thin, continuous gray lines, suspended and serene.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This sheet has two drawings in one! On one side everything is dark brown at the bottom, as if many soldiers were huddled in a hole. I see the pale-faced man with his cap and his long rifle going diagonally, and another light-colored helmet in the middle of wiggly lines. On the other side the paper is much lighter and you can see little tapes at the corners. There a lady lying down rests on her arm, with her hair tied up, and she looks at me with a tiny smile. I like that one side is so full and the other so empty.

  1. #1

On the front, what long diagonal object does the pale-faced soldier at the far left hold?

    HintPista

Look in the lower left third for the dark line that rises at an angle next to the soldier with the cap.

  2. #2

In which corner of the front can you read the signature and the date 1915?

    HintPista

Look at the bottom edge of the side with the soldiers and the dark mass.

  3. #3

On the back, besides the reclining woman, what round marks are seen at the upper left of the light paper?

    HintPista

Look at the worn, light-colored paper near its top corners.
