What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a vertical print with a decorative geometric border, a full-length female figure dominates the composition, turned slightly to the left with her head raised in a calm, contemplative gaze. She wears a long, flowing gown with short sleeves and abundant drapery gathered at the waist by a sash that flutters outward on both sides; her right hand rests on her chest while her left lifts the hem of her dress, revealing her bare feet. Her long wavy hair falls over her shoulders and down her back, topped by a simple headdress. Beneath her, a swan with outstretched wings floats on rippled water, its curved neck lowered so its beak touches the surface, acting as her pedestal. In the background a fanciful seascape stretches out, with small rocky islets and a tiny building crowning a distant hill. The engraving line is fine and precise, with delicate hatching for shading; traces of hand-coloring in pale ochre and gold appear on the headdress, sash and plumage. The paper shows age, with foxing, staining and irregular deckled edges. At the bottom, a cartouche bears the inscription · CLIO · XVIIII · with the letter D on the left and number 19 on the right, enclosed by a diamond-pattern frame.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central figure and her restrained gesture, then follow your eye down to the swan supporting her on the water. Notice the drapery folds and the fluttering sash that adds movement. Finally look at the diamond border and the inscription below that names the Muse and her number in the series.
ContextContexto
This engraving belongs to the so-called Tarocchi Group D, dedicated to Apollo and the Muses, produced in Ferrara, Italy, before 1467 by the anonymous Master of the E-Series Tarocchi, active in the 1460s. The technique is engraving hand-colored with gold. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Clio is shown as the Muse of history, one of the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, led by Apollo, god of light, music and poetry. The series was not a divinatory tarot but a didactic set of fifty allegorical prints reflecting Renaissance cosmology. Its original function is not fully known, but it was probably an educational tool for humanist elites.

Curious detailDato curioso
Despite the name Tarocchi, these prints were not used for games or fortune-telling but as a visual encyclopedia of Renaissance knowledge, collecting allegories of arts, sciences and social ranks in fifty images.

I focus on the mark left by the copper plate on the paper. The line is extremely fine and the shading is built with very controlled cross-hatching, typical of engraving from Ferrara before 1467. I see the hand-applied color in ochre and golden tones on the headdress, the belt and the swan’s plumage, now somewhat faded. The light ivory support shows aging, stains and irregular edges that speak of its age. I am intrigued by how the gold still catches the light on the geometric lozenge border framing the lower cartouche.

Clio gazes upward, serene, as if searching for a constellation to guide her. I love that her pedestal is not a column but a swan with outstretched wings floating on rippled water, its beak touching the surface. In the background, that imaginary sea with tiny rocky islands and a building atop a promontory feels like a cosmos in miniature. It belongs to series D of Apollo and the Muses, fifty didactic prints about the Renaissance worldview, much more a map of ideas than a fortune-telling tarot.

Clio looks like a fairy-tale princess with her long dress full of folds and her belt with a sash fluttering at her sides. She is barefoot and holds her dress with one hand while the other rests on her chest, as if she were sharing a secret. Her long hair falls down her back and she wears a little crown. The most magical part is that she is standing on a big swan with open wings floating on the water! At the bottom it says · CLIO · XVIIII · with a D and a 19 inside a frame with little diamonds.
