What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, centered against a plain ground that fades from black at the top to dark gray below, is a man's head in yellowish-white marble, together with the beginning of his neck, chest, and shoulders. It is a small, fragmentary work: the lower edge breaks off unevenly, and on the viewer's left the shoulder survives only as a rough stump, with chipped edges and losses of stone. The face turns slightly to his left — toward the viewer's right — and tilts downward a little. The eyes have no carved pupils and appear half closed beneath lightly indicated brows; the nose is worn and has lost definition at its tip. The mouth is small, with closed lips and a serious expression. The hair is short and thick, combed forward in wavy, curling locks carved with deep grooves that hold small shadows. A short, curly beard covers the cheeks and jaw but is thinner above the lip, where a discreet moustache can be made out. Soft, raking light emphasizes the broad forehead, angular cheekbones, and chin. The surface combines smoother passages on the skin with rough, stained, and weathered areas, especially on the cheeks and chest.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the turn of the head and the direction of the blank eyes, which give the portrait its quiet movement. Then compare the deeply carved curls of the hair with the shorter, rougher curls of the beard. Notice the broken chest and missing shoulders: the absent body changes the effect from a formal bust to an intimate, surviving face.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where this work is held through the Gift of J. H. Wade, it is an anonymous Roman portrait made in Italy around 125 CE. The small marble head, with part of the neck and chest preserved, probably belonged to a bust. Beards were uncommon in Rome until Emperor Hadrian, who reigned from 117 to 138 CE, made them fashionable. This man's hair and beard closely follow Hadrian's style, and he was once mistaken for the emperor; however, his face is more angular. His identity is unknown, although he was probably a wealthy or noble Roman imitating the imperial image.

Curious detailDato curioso

This man was once identified as Emperor Hadrian himself, solely because of the fashionable arrangement of his hair and beard. He is now considered a private individual who adopted the emperor's look.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why would a private Roman choose to be portrayed with the same hairstyle and beard as the reigning emperor?¿Por qué un romano particular querría retratarse con el mismo peinado y la misma barba que el emperador en turno?
  2. How does the loss of most of the bust change the way we relate to this person?¿Cómo cambia nuestra relación con esta persona el hecho de que se haya perdido casi todo el busto?
  3. Which matters more in this portrait: resemblance to an individual, or resemblance to the fashionable ideal of his time?¿Qué pesa más en este retrato: el parecido con un individuo concreto o el parecido con el ideal de moda de su época?

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see this is not a complete portrait but a broken fragment, and that fascinates me. Notice the irregular lower edge and the stump of the shoulder on our left, with rough stone stained by centuries of erosion. The surface combines polished skin on the forehead with porous areas on the cheeks and chest. The curly hair, carved with deep grooves, still holds shadows shaped by the side light. As a conservator I wonder how much history that yellowish marble holds between what survived and what was lost.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I keep wondering where he is looking. His face turns slightly to his left and tilts downward, as if observing something small and distant. The eyes without carved pupils, half closed under soft brows, give him a serious and focused expression. The dark background fading from black to gray reminds me of a night sky and makes the pale marble stand out like a moon. The worn nose and angular chin show the passage of time, but his curly hair still seems to catch light like tiny craters.

Me quedo mirando hacia dónde mira él.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

He looks like a serious man who fell asleep with his eyes half open. He has very curly hair like lots of little clay worms and a short beard covering his cheeks but almost no mustache. His nose is a bit worn and his mouth is tightly closed. You only see his head, a bit of his neck and chest because it is broken below and one shoulder is missing a chunk. He turns his head as if he were looking at my shoes and that makes me giggle a little.
