Chateau Saint Ouen from the CourtEl castillo de Saint-Ouen desde el patio

engraving
What you would seeLo que verías
A wide horizontal engraving in sepia ink on beige paper, set inside a generous pale margin. Its composition is built on strong central perspective: a broad, mostly empty courtyard draws the eye toward the château, placed in the middle distance. On either side, regular rows of tall trees with slender trunks and dense canopies form shaded avenues, framing the scene and stressing its symmetry. In the foreground a low railing crosses the width of the image. Small groups in eighteenth-century dress gather beside it: men in coats, wigs and hats, women in full skirts. To the left a woman sits by a curved basin or fountain; near the centre two people ride in a light carriage, while at right a man tends a horse. Farther back, isolated figures stroll across the pale, open ground, giving scale to the estate. The château has a symmetrical multi-storey facade, a sloping roof, chimneys and a gated central entrance, flanked by smaller buildings. Above, the sky is rendered with fine horizontal lines and soft clouds, with tiny birds visible on close looking. Below the image are a French inscription, a central coat of arms and small lettering in the corners.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the low railing in the foreground and follow the central avenue toward the gate and the château. Then look sideways: the tree-lined walks, fountain, carriage and horse show that this is also a scene of leisure. Finally, read the dedication below the image; it turns a view into a gesture of deference.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this print was made by French artist Jacques Rigaud (1681-1754) around 1720-50 and is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it arrived as a Gift of Mrs. Andrew Squire. Rigaud was known for engraved views of French royal and aristocratic residences, made for cultivated audiences who valued order, perspective and architecture. The inscription presents this as a view of the Château de Saint-Ouen from the courtyard side and dedicates it to the Duke of Gesvres, governor of Paris and the Île-de-France. The exact day of production and the identity of the figures are not known; they probably serve to animate the setting and indicate its social rank.

Curious detailDato curioso
Beneath the coat of arms, Rigaud signs himself in French as the duke's 'very humble and very obedient servant', a formula of deference typical of dedications in prints of the period.

I pause on the beige paper and sepia ink that make up this horizontal engraving, with its wide pale margin that protects it like a silent frame. I notice the fine lines of the sky, the soft clouds and the regular stroke of the tree-lined avenues that create a very strong central perspective toward the château in the background. I am drawn to the low railing in the foreground, the curved fountain and the tiny figures in eighteenth-century dress, all drawn with precision to convey serenity and order without adding anything beyond what is visible.

What attracts me most is how the engraver uses perspective like a telescope: the empty courtyard and the two avenues of tall trees guide the eye straight to the château centered in the distance. The sky fills the upper part with fine hatching, soft clouds and even tiny birds that look like distant dots. Below, the French inscription and the central coat of arms anchor the image to its dedication to the Duke of Gesvres, reminding me that this symmetrical order was also a way to display power and clarity in the eighteenth century.

It feels like I am on a giant path that leads to a fairy-tale castle and the tall trees are like guardians on each side. In front there is a little railing and lots of tiny people with puffy dresses and funny hats, as if they are playing at strolling. I see a lady sitting by a curved fountain, a carriage with two people in the middle and a man with a horse on the right. The sky has very very tiny birds and everything looks calm, as if no one is in a hurry.
