What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white etching on ivory-colored paper, nearly square with an irregular plate mark and slightly wavy deckled margins. In the foreground, on patchy grass and scattered stones rendered with short hatched strokes, two goats lie recumbent. The central goat, seen in three-quarter view with its head turned to the right, displays long, shaggy fur built up with dense, overlapping curvilinear lines that create deep shadow and volume; its horns curve backward and its beard hangs thick. To its left, a second recumbent goat faces forward, horns arched, its textured fleece partly hidden by the grass tufts. Standing just behind them in profile and facing left is a third goat, alert, with a bristly back, short tail and slender, well-defined legs and hooves. On the left background, a gnarled tree trunk and loosely sketched foliage with rapid, scribbled lines suggest a small grove, while the remainder of the background is left blank, isolating the animals. The light is soft and even, without harsh shadows, and the draftsmanship is meticulous in beards, horns, hooves and individual locks of hair. At the lower right, a delicate cursive signature reads Berchem f.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dark, heavily worked goat lying in the center and trace the contrast between its dense coat and the lightly hatched grass. Compare the three poses — two lying down, one standing — to see how they create a calm triangular composition. Finally look to the tree trunk on the left and the small signature at the lower right to see how the artist frames and signs the study.

ContextContexto

The print is titled Animalia: Three Goats and is by Nicolaes Berchem (1620–1683), a Dutch painter and etcher. According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, it is dated between 1635 and 1683 and executed as an etching on paper. It belongs to Netherlandish culture and is part of the museum's Prints department, credited to the Dudley P. Allen Fund. Berchem was renowned in the seventeenth-century Netherlands for Italianate landscapes and pastoral scenes with livestock, which were highly collectible. The Animalia series groups studies of cattle, sheep and goats. No further specific information about the edition or state of this impression is given in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

Berchem often made etchings after his own drawings of animals observed from life, and the Animalia series was widely copied by other artists and used as a model book for learning to draw livestock.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the ivory colored paper and its irregular margin with wavy edges from printing, which tells us about the etching process. Look at the short crosshatched lines of the grass and stones, and the dense curved strokes that build the shaggy coats and thick beards. The soft even light reveals hooves and tufts without harsh shadows. At the lower right the handwritten signature Berchem f. remains, a direct trace of the printmaker on the sheet.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Like someone charting constellations, I count three goats against a blank sky that works like empty space. Two lie in the foreground on short grass and loose stones, one in three quarter view looking right and another facing forward to the left; the third stands behind in profile facing left. I am drawn to the blank background that makes the animals stand out, with the knotted trunk and sketchy foliage at left like a distant grove drawn with quick light lines.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see three little goats with lots of curly shaggy hair and long beards, they look like they are hugging the grass. Two are lying down and one is standing up watching over them, like a family. I like to find the skinny little legs, the short tails and the tiny horns curving back. Behind them there is a little tree made of lots of lines that is their home. Everything is black and white on creamy paper and you can see many tiny hairs drawn one by one with great care.
