What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a nearly square etching in black ink on warm, yellowed paper, surrounded by a wide, irregular margin and the faint sunken rectangle of the plate mark. Two animals occupy almost the entire scene and both look straight at the viewer. In the foreground, a ram lies on the ground with its legs folded beneath its body. Its thick, curly fleece is built from short, dense strokes and small spirals; its horns curve around its ears, first forward and then backward, and its calm muzzle rests at the center of the composition. Behind it, standing and seen in three-quarter view, a goat rises above the ram. It has long, shaggy hair falling in wavy locks, a small beard, ears pointing sideways, and two tall curved horns, one leaning back and one nearly upright. The ground is suggested very economically: scattered tufts of grass, short marks, cross-hatching on the left and right, and a low line of shadow for a horizon. There is no sky, architecture, or human figure. The light comes from the line itself: the more repeated strokes, the deeper the shadow and the denser the coat. At lower left, in cursive handwriting, one can read “Berghem f.” Next to it there is a tiny dark mark, like a small stone or insect.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the two gazes directed straight at you, one above the other. Then compare their coats: the ram's dense curls versus the goat's long, falling hair. Finally, notice how a few sparse tufts of grass and the light hatching on the horizon are enough to create an entire landscape.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this print is titled Animalia: Ram and Goat, by Dutch artist Nicolaes Berchem (1620–1683), and belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, credited to the Dudley P. Allen Fund. It is an etching from the Netherlands, dated broadly to 1635–83, a range that probably reflects the artist's period of activity rather than a precise year; the exact date of this impression is not known. Berchem was known in seventeenth-century Dutch art for pastoral scenes and studies of livestock, often inspired by Italian landscapes. The title Animalia suggests that it belongs to a series devoted to animals, although that detail is not confirmed in the source data provided.

Curious detailDato curioso

The inscription at lower left is not spelled exactly like the name in the museum record: on the plate one can read “Berghem f.”, where the “f.” is the traditional abbreviation of the Latin fecit, meaning “made this.”

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does the etching gain by placing two such different coats and postures within the same small space?¿Qué gana el grabado al reunir en un espacio tan pequeño dos pelajes y dos posturas tan distintas?
  2. If both animals look at us, does the scene feel like a portrait, a natural study, or both?
  3. How can a landscape be suggested with only grass, hatching, and empty paper?¿Cómo se puede sugerir un paisaje solo con pasto, rayado y papel vacío?

What holds me here is the paper itself, warm and yellowish, with its wide margin and the soft rectangular plate mark pressed into the sheet. The black ink does everything through line: short strokes, spirals and crosshatching that build the thick curly fleece of the reclining ram and the long shaggy coat of the standing goat. At lower left I can read the handwritten signature «Berghem f.» and a small dark speck like a pebble. There is no sky, just a low horizon and a few tufts of grass hinted with great economy.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As a sky watcher I love how Berchem has both models looking straight out, as if posing for a portrait. One is lying down with legs tucked under, the other stands in three quarter view behind it, with tall curved horns. There is no architecture or human figure, just ground and a very low horizon line. Light does not come from a painted sun: it comes from line density, more strokes where the shadow is deeper and fewer where the paper needs to breathe. It is an exercise in pure observation.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two friends staring right at me! The one in front is lying down as if taking a nap, all fluffy with curly wool and horns wrapped around its ears. The one behind is standing and looks messier, with long hanging hair and a funny little beard. The ground has just a few grass tufts and some little lines for shadows. I like that they are together and look so calm, like they are saying hi without making any noise.
