What you would seeLo que verías

This is a vertical print with slightly irregular edges, on pale, fibrous paper. In the lower half, an arched stone bridge crosses from left to right over the deep-blue Meguro River, which winds into the distance between snow-covered banks. The low railing is also dusted with snow. Small figures, hunched against the cold, cross over it: on the left, a person with a white umbrella and light-colored layers; in the center, two travelers seen from behind, with snow-covered hats or umbrellas, purple and blue-green kimonos, and white socks with sandals; at lower right, two more figures shelter beneath large, yellowish hats. In the foreground below, snow-laden branches and the sloping roof of a shop act as a frame. On the left rise a pale hill, twisted pines, and a large tree—bare of its red leaves, perhaps a maple—covered in white; fences, reeds, and rhythmic shrubs fill the riverbank. On the right, tall, slender trees frame the landscape. The sky occupies nearly the upper half, shifting from blue-black at the top to gray-blue speckled with tiny snowflakes. Creamy white and blue-gray dominate, with red accents in two vertical cartouches bearing black Japanese calligraphy at the upper and lower right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the curve of the bridge and the small figures crossing it, then let your eye travel along the river toward the distant, crowded shoreline. Notice how a place celebrated for red autumn maples is shown buried under snow, and look for the red cartouches that punctuate the white landscape.

ContextContexto

Color woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), dated 1857, from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. It depicts the Drum Bridge over the Meguro River in Edo, present-day Tokyo, so named because its arched profile resembled a drum. Across the bridge lies Sunset Hill, once famous for its red maple leaves in autumn. In the lower right, behind the artist’s signature, is the roof of Shōgatsu-ya, a shop that served shiruko mochi, a sweet red-bean soup with rice cakes enjoyed in winter. Beyond this information, specific details about this individual impression are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Sunset Hill was famous for its red autumn maples, yet Hiroshige chose to depict it in deep winter, replacing the celebrated red foliage with snow and leaving the red only in the inscription cartouches.

I focus on the light, fibrous paper and how the snow is not just creamy white pigment, but the paper itself left blank. Notice the slightly irregular edges and the sky gradation from deep blue-black to grey-blue. Hiroshige achieved that velvety effect with a baren and translucent layers. The vermilion red of the cartouches contrasts with the intense blue of the river. Look at the tiny details: snowflakes, reeds, the snow-covered railing. Each woodblock left its own trace.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I love this night sky because it is not flat black: it shifts from almost black-blue at the top to greyish blue below, sprinkled with flakes like stars. Hiroshige painted a snowy winter night over Edo in 1857, and the contrast between the cold creamy white snow and the deep blue of the Meguro River makes a silent night. The travelers with white umbrellas look like little moving moons. It is a landscape for measuring light and winter silence.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a chilly fairy tale. The bridge is like a drum belly full of snow and people walk hunched over with umbrellas and huge yellowish hats to stay dry. Down below you can see the little roof of a shop that sells warm sweet red bean soup with rice cakes, yummy for winter! I like counting the tiny travelers and seeing the blue river making curves. The tree with no red leaves is all fluffy and white, as if it had ice cream on top.
