What you would seeLo que verías

In a vertical composition, a young woman stands at center, shown in three-quarter length, nearly to her knees, against a very dark background of foliage. Her body turns slightly to her left, but her face is frontal, with a serene expression, lips closed, and her gaze directed toward the viewer. Her dark hair is swept up into a voluminous bun with soft waves framing her forehead. She wears a light, low-necked dress with a wide lace collar falling over her shoulders, short puffed sleeves to the elbow, and delicate floral embroidery across the bodice. A small brooch is pinned near her left shoulder. The skirt, rendered with long vertical lines, suggests satin catching the light unevenly. In her relaxed right hand she holds a half-open fan against her skirt; her left hand rests lightly over it. The trees behind her are almost silhouettes, denser and blacker on the right, while the upper left shows a hatched, slightly lighter sky. The contrast between her pale skin, the bright dress, and the shadows is created solely through fine engraved lines and cross-hatching. The image is surrounded by a wide cream paper margin. Below, handwritten, are a dedication on the left and the artist's signature on the right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at her face, the lightest and calmest point, then let your gaze travel down through the lace and the sheen of her skirt. Next, compare the clarity of her figure with the almost black foliage that frames her. Finally, step outside the image to the lower margin: the dedication and signature transform the print into a personal gift.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this work is titled Mrs. Cowperthwait, was made by American artist Henry Wolf (1852–1916), and is a wood engraving catalogued broadly between 1867 and 1916, within late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American printmaking. Wolf was known for the technical refinement of his wood engravings, a medium widely used to reproduce images with great tonal nuance. The identity of the sitter and the exact date are not recorded in the source data, and it is not known whether the engraving reproduces a specific painting. The dedication visible below the image suggests that this particular impression was presented as a gift by the engraver.

Curious detailDato curioso

What reads from a distance as soft gray shading is, up close, a dense network of fine incised lines and cross-hatching: the tonal richness of wood engraving comes entirely from black ink and the white of the paper.

I pause to look at how Henry Wolf builds light using only line, with no white ink, just letting the cream paper breathe. Look at the light dress: those long vertical lines and cross-hatching create the satiny shine and the lace at the collar. The dark foliage background is a dense tapestry of very fine hatching, almost black on the right and more open at the upper left where he hints at the sky. The wide, intact margin with a handwritten dedication and signature tells us this impression was treasured as a gift.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this is a study in contrast, like watching a bright star against the night. The woman, with her light skin and pale dress, glows apart from the foliage background so dark it looks like a silhouette. Wolf carves light with fine hatching: at the upper left the sky is just a bit lighter, barely a delicate mesh, while on the right the darkness grows deeper. That half-open fan and the small brooch are like tiny shadow eclipses that help us measure the glow of the whole image.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

She looks like a storybook princess in black and white! Her dress is long and shiny, with a big lacy collar and puffy sleeves and little embroidered flowers. Her hair is up with soft waves and she wears a tiny brooch. In one hand she holds a fan that is just a little open, as if she is about to play. She stands very straight among super dark trees and looks right at us, calm and kind. Everything is made with lots of little lines, but she looks bright and fancy.
