Paul Gavarni (French, 1804–1866) · c. 1847 · France, 19th century
lithograph
What you would seeLo que verías
A black-and-white lithograph on cream paper, framed by a thin rectangular border with small printed text at the top and bottom. Two men occupy almost the entire scene, seen from the thighs up and drawn with loose, energetic strokes, cross-hatching, and dense black areas. On the left, an older man stands in three-quarter view, turned toward the right, with one hand thrust into his trouser pocket. He has a receding hairline, prominent ears, deep creases beside the nose, a thick mustache, and a pointed goatee. He wears a wide-brimmed soft hat, slightly lopsided, a kerchief knotted at his neck, a buttoned jacket with loose sleeves, and a sash or belt around his waist. His posture is casual and his expression wry, almost smug. Facing him, on the right and seen almost entirely from behind, is a younger figure — suggested by smoother skin and longer hair reaching his collar. He wears a tall, glossy black top hat and a long, very dark coat that hides his body in a single solid mass. The background is barely sketched: pale, sketchy shapes suggest chairs or structures. Below the image, the caption in French reads: “— Vous portez un shako comme ça, sans pompom, jeune homme ?”
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First compare the two silhouettes: the soft, tilted hat against the rigid cylinder. Then look at how the older man turns toward the viewer while the younger man remains turned away. The caption only makes sense once you notice that the top hat looks, with little imagination, like a military shako missing its pompom.
ContextContexto
The Cleveland Museum of Art identifies this work as Baliverneries Parisiennes, a lithograph by Paul Gavarni (French, 1804–1866), dated around 1847 and acquired through the Dudley P. Allen Fund. Gavarni was a well-known draftsman of Parisian manners, famous for series of lithographs commenting wittily on everyday types and conversations. The heading places this sheet as number 6 in the Baliverneries Parisiennes — roughly “Parisian Trifles” — and beneath the image an older man asks: “Vous portez un shako comme ça, sans pompom, jeune homme?” In other words, he mocks the young man's top hat by comparing it to a military shako without a pompom. The exact original publication context beyond the printer Aubert, named on the sheet, is not stated in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso
The joke depends entirely on fashion: the tall, straight top hat of the 1840s really did resemble a shako, the stiff military cap — except, as the older man points out, without the decorative pompom.

I pause on the cream paper and the thin rectangular border framing the scene, then on how loose strokes and cross-hatching build volume with very little. On the left, the older man in a soft wide-brimmed hat, neckerchief and buttoned jacket shows folds and texture through intense blacks; on the right, the young man in a top hat and dark coat is almost a solid, shiny mass. That contrast between detailed and synthetic is typical of lithography around 1847.

I see this lithograph like a sky with two opposing constellations. On the left, the older man is a nearby star, full of details: thick moustache, pointed beard, prominent ears and tilted hat. On the right, the young man in a top hat is an eclipse, dark and compact, seen from behind, absorbing light. The French caption works like an orbit connecting them: the joke about a shako without a pompom. Both spin in a brief dialogue against a barely sketched background.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
There are two gentlemen who look like they are playing who looks fancier! The man on the left wears a soft hat and has one hand in his pocket, like he is joking. The one on the right makes me laugh because I only see his back and his tall black hat looks like a shiny tube. At the bottom there are French words asking about a pompom. I imagine the older man is teasing the young man about his hat in a playful way.
