What you would seeLo que verías
A black-and-white etching with fine, energetic hatching depicts St. Mark's Square in Venice from a low, slightly oblique viewpoint. In the foreground, on the paved square, a bustle of small yet expressive figures: ladies in voluminous skirts holding parasols, merchants under awnings, children, dogs, and clusters of people chatting. A towering flagpole rises at the center, vertically bisecting the cloudy sky. To the left, the massive, heavily shaded arch and corner of the Doge's Palace or St. Mark's Basilica dominates, with columns, archivolts, and an upper balustrade rendered through dense crosshatching to suggest shadow and depth. Along the left side and across the background stretches the long, uniform façade of the Procuratie Nuove, with two stories of repeated arcades and a roofline dotted with chimneys. On the right, a tall building is cropped by the edge, showing balconies, shuttered windows, striped awnings, and a small hanging lantern. At the far end of the square stands the classical façade of the Church of San Geminiano, with a triangular pediment and low domes. The sky is filled with fluffy clouds drawn with looping, sketchy lines and stippling, giving lightness and atmospheric perspective. The texture of aged paper is visible, with a faint foxing stain at the top left and delicate etched lines creating light, shadow, and Venetian air.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the tall central flagpole that structures the square, then follow the long arcade of the Procuratie Nuove toward the background. Linger on the lively foreground crowd: parasols and gestures reveal daily life within monumental architecture. Notice how Canaletto creates light, depth, and air using only black lines on pale paper.
ContextContexto
This etching is by Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto (1697–1768), dated between 1735 and 1746 according to the Cleveland Museum of Art where it is housed. It belongs to the series called Views or Vedute, in which the Venetian artist recorded the urban spaces of Venice with topographic accuracy and luminous sensitivity. It shows the Procuratie Nuove, the southern wing of St. Mark's Square that housed high magistrates of the Republic, and the former Church of San Geminiano in the background, demolished in the early 19th century under Napoleonic rule to make way for the Napoleonic Wing. The signature A. Canal f. appears at the lower left and the caption le Procuratie niove e S. Ziminian V. at the center bottom.

Canaletto, famous for large oil paintings made for British Grand Tour travelers, also etched a series of 31 views of Venice; this print retains his abbreviated signature A. Canal f., where f. stands for fecit, meaning he made it.

I pause on the texture of the old paper and the yellowish stain at the upper left corner, a mark of time that is also a record. The fine, nervous etching line builds shadows with dense hatching on the arches and light with curved strokes and dots in the puffy clouds. I notice the signature A. Canal f. at the lower left and think about how each line preserves the Venetian light over the paving and the repeated arcades.

From my perspective I look for the sky, though here there are no stars but puffy clouds made of dots and curves. I am fascinated by the very tall mast that cuts vertically across the square as if trying to measure the heavens. Canaletto, between 1735 and 1746, recorded this precise Venetian light with an almost scientific sensitivity. I imagine dusk over St. Mark's Square and how light and shadow shape the low domes of San Geminiano and the chimneys of the Procuratie Nuove.

I love counting tiny things on the pavement, it looks like a busy anthill. I see ladies with wide skirts and parasols, merchants under striped awnings, kids, dogs and curious people chatting in little groups. On the left there is a huge arch with columns and on the right balconies with railings and a little hanging lamp. At the back is the Church of San Geminiano with its triangle on top and in the middle a giant pole reaching up to the sky. It looks like everyone came out to play in the square!
