What you would seeLo que verías

An etching in black ink on cream paper, in horizontal format. On the left, a large ruinous building with a wide stone arch dominates the view. Its roof is half collapsed, with loose tiles, exposed beams and crumbling walls overgrown with ivy and weeds. Light passes through the arch, revealing an interior with wooden fences and a well or waterwheel. Under the arch, a female figure bends over to draw water into buckets beside a basin. In the immediate foreground, on the left, on an uneven earthen bank shaded with dense, cross-hatched strokes, two smaller figures appear — one seated and one standing with a pitcher, seen from behind. To the right of the ruin, a narrow canal or stream runs toward the background, crossed by a flimsy footbridge made of logs. In the distance, the horizon is low and open, with soft hills, slender trees, a triangular tent, a mill with a conical roof and a domed building. The sky fills the upper half, hatched with fine horizontal lines suggesting clouds and diffuse light. The linework is nervous, sketchy and richly textured, especially in the rendering of stone, foliage and rippling water.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large ruined arch on the left and follow its shadow to the woman working with water. Then move down to the foreground to find the two tiny figures on the bank and the trembling reflection in the stream. Finally let your eye wander to the distant hills and cottages that balance the composition.

ContextContexto

This work is titled Views: A Woman Drawing Water under an Arch, attributed to Antonio Canaletto (Italian, 1697–1768) and dated 1735–1746 according to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is an etching, classified as a Print, and held in the Prints department. No further description is provided by the source. Canaletto is best known for his vedute of Venice, though this print shows a more rustic and capricious landscape with ruins and everyday life, typical of his etched Views and capricci series. The exact location depicted is not known and is probably a composite invention combining architectural and rural motifs observed in the Veneto.

Curious detailDato curioso

Canaletto, celebrated for his precise and luminous oil views of Venice, produced only about thirty etchings, in which he adopted a free and almost sketch-like line very different from the meticulous finish of his paintings.

I focus on how this print was made. It is an etching in black ink on cream paper, in a horizontal format. The line work is lively and sketch-like, yet very precise in its textures: the peeling stone of the arch, the ivy, the loose roof tiles and the dense cross-hatching of the earth bank in the foreground tell me a lot about the plate and the printing pressure. It is a delicate impression, and that contrast between the deep black and the light background is what creates its diffuse light.

I look at the sky, which takes up the upper half of the image. It is rendered with fine horizontal lines that suggest clouds and an even, overcast morning light. The horizon is low and open, with soft hills, slender trees, a mill with a conical roof and a dome in the distance. That layout reminds me of how we observe: a close foreground with the large ruined arch and then a background fading into distance, inviting us to measure depth with our eyes.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

That giant arch looks like a cave made of old stones! It is all broken, with little hanging plants and a roof about to fall down. Down below there is a lady bending over to get water with buckets and closer to us there are two tiny people seen from behind, one sitting and one standing with a jug. I like the little canal running alongside and the tiny log bridge, would you dare to cross it? In the back you can see little houses and everything feels like an adventure.
